1Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

1Then all the people of Israel gathered around David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and blood.'

2In times past, even when Saul was king, it was thou that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and Jehovah thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt be shepherd of my people Israel, and thou shalt be prince over my people Israel.

2'Even in the past, when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out to battle and brought them home again. And the LORD your God said to you, "You will be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the ruler over my people Israel."'

3So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Jehovah; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of Jehovah by Samuel.

3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron. David made a covenant with them there in the presence of the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel, just as the LORD had promised through Samuel.

4And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (the same is Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.

4David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (which was called Jebus). The Jebusites, who lived in that land, were there.

5And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come in hither. Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; the same is the city of David.

5The people of Jebus told David, 'You will never get in here!' But David captured the fortress of Zion, which is now called the City of David.

6And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and was made chief.

6David had said, 'Whoever leads the attack against the Jebusites will become the commander-in-chief.' Joab son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became the leader.

7And David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the city of David.

7David made his home in the fortress, and that is why it was named the City of David.

8And he built the city round about, from Millo even round about; and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

8He built up the city around it, starting from the Millo and continuing all around the wall, while Joab repaired the rest of the city.

9And David waxed greater and greater; for Jehovah of hosts was with him.

9David became more and more powerful, because the LORD of Heaven’s Armies was with him.

10Now these are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who showed themselves strong with him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of Jehovah concerning Israel.

10These are the leaders of David’s mighty warriors. They, along with all Israel, gave David strong support in his kingdom to make him king, just as the LORD had promised concerning Israel.

11And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, the chief of the thirty; he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them at one time.

11This is the list of David’s mighty men: Jashobeam the Hachmonite was the leader of the Three. He once used his spear to kill three hundred men in a single battle.

12And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.

12Next in rank among the three mighty men was Eleazar son of Dodo, the Ahohite.

13He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a plot of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.

13He was with David at Pas-dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. There was a field full of barley there, and the Israelite army fled from the Philistines.

14And they stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines; and Jehovah saved them by a great victory.

14But Eleazar and David stood their ground in the middle of the field and defended it, killing the Philistines. The LORD gave them a great victory.

15And three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines were encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

15Three of the thirty leading men went down to David at the rock by the cave of Adullam, while a company of Philistines was camped in the Valley of Rephaim.

16And David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Beth-lehem.

16David was in the fortress at that time, and a Philistine garrison was stationed in Bethlehem.

17And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!

17David was homesick and said, 'I wish someone would get me a drink of water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem!'

18And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto Jehovah,

18So the three warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But David refused to drink it. Instead, he poured it out as an offering to the LORD.

19and said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

19He said, 'God forbid that I should drink this! This water is like the blood of these men who risked their lives to get it.' Because they risked their lives, he would not drink it. These were the kinds of things the three mighty men did.

20And Abishai, the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three; for he lifted up his spear against three hundred and slew them, and had a name among the three.

20Abishai, the brother of Joab, was the leader of the Thirty. He once used his spear to kill three hundred men, which made him famous among the three.

21Of the three, he was more honorable than the two, and was made their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three.

21He was more famous than the others in the Thirty and became their captain, but he was not included among the elite Three.

22Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, he slew the twosons ofAriel of Moab: he went down also and slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow.

22Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a brave fighter from Kabzeel who did many great things. He killed two of Moab’s best warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

23And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian’s hand was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and slew him with his own spear.

23He also killed an Egyptian who was seven and a half feet tall. The Egyptian had a spear as thick as a weaver’s beam, but Benaiah went after him with only a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.

24These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had a name among the three mighty men.

24Benaiah son of Jehoiada did these things and was famous among the three mighty warriors.

25Behold, he was more honorable than the thirty, but he attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.

25He was honored more than the rest of the Thirty, but he was not one of the elite Three. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
