The Hebrew adjective קָרוֹב (qarov) primarily denotes proximity, encompassing a broad semantic range that includes spatial closeness, temporal imminence, and relational intimacy. This versatility allows it to describe objects, events, and individuals. In its spatial sense, it can describe physical closeness, as when Jacob invited his family to be "near unto me" in Goshen (Gen 45:10). It can also refer to people who are physically accessible or live in the vicinity.

Temporally, קָרוֹב frequently indicates that an event is "at hand" or "near to come." This usage often carries eschatological weight, particularly in prophetic texts where it describes the impending "day of the Lord" (Joel 1:15) or the approaching salvation of God (Isa 56:1). Such passages emphasize God's sovereign control over time and his faithfulness in bringing his plans to fruition, whether in judgment or redemption.

Furthermore, קָרוֹב is used to express relational closeness, referring to kinsmen or those with whom one has a close affiliation. This can be seen in Ruth 2:20, where Boaz is identified as a "near kinsman," highlighting his familial tie and the associated responsibilities. In a theological context, קָרוֹב can describe God's presence and accessibility to his people, as in Jeremiah 23:23, where the Lord asks, "Am I a God at hand... and not a God afar off?" This question underscores God's immanence and his active involvement in the lives of his covenant people. The concept of God being "nigh them that fear him" (Ps 85:9) assures believers of his continued presence and readiness to save.
