פְּלִשְׁתִּי

(pel-ish-TEE)

noun, gentile

A gentile noun referring to the Philistines, a people who migrated to the southern coast of Canaan.

The Philistines were a non-Semitic people who migrated from the Aegean region and settled in the coastal plain of Canaan, west of Judah, primarily in the cities of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. They frequently warred with the Israelites, especially during the period of the Judges and early Monarchy. Their military prowess and technological advantage (iron weaponry) often posed a significant threat to Israel.

While first mentioned in Genesis 10:14 within a genealogical list, their prominent role in biblical narrative begins with the accounts of Samson in the book of Judges. They are consistently portrayed as antagonists of Israel, symbolizing the constant external threats faced by God's people. The Philistines are often depicted as oppressing the Israelites, and many narratives focus on Israel's deliverance from their power through leaders like Samson, Saul, and especially David.

The conflict with the Philistines was a pivotal factor in the establishment of the Israelite monarchy, as the people desired a king to lead them in battle against their formidable enemy. David's victory over Goliath, the Philistine champion, is a classic example of this ongoing struggle and God's intervention on behalf of Israel. Throughout the Old Testament, the Philistines represent a persistent challenge to Israel's security and national identity.
