יְבוּסִי

(yeh-boo-SEE)

proper noun

The Jebusites were a Canaanite people group who inhabited the city of Jerusalem (also called Jebus) before its conquest by King David.

The term "Jebusite" refers to the inhabitants of Jebus, an ancient name for the city of Jerusalem. They are consistently listed among the various Canaanite tribes inhabiting the land of Canaan prior to the Israelite conquest. Their presence in the biblical narrative primarily highlights the challenge faced by the Israelites in fully dispossessing the land’s original inhabitants and serves as a backdrop for the eventual establishment of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

While the Jebusites are often mentioned alongside other Canaanite groups like the Hittites, Amorites, and Perizzites, their most significant role is tied directly to Jerusalem. Despite the initial failures of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin to drive them out of Jerusalem (Joshua 15:63; Judges 1:21), they maintained a presence in the city for centuries. This enduring presence underscores the difficulty of the conquest and the continued struggle for control over key geographic and strategic locations.

The Jebusites are most famously encountered in the account of David's capture of Jerusalem. David successfully conquered the stronghold of Zion from the Jebusites, making Jerusalem his capital city (2 Samuel 5:6-9; 1 Chronicles 11:4-9). This act was a pivotal moment in Israelite history, transforming Jerusalem from a foreign city into the "City of David." Even after the conquest, some Jebusites remained, such as Ornan (or Araunah), whose threshing floor David purchased to build an altar, which later became the site of Solomon's Temple (2 Samuel 24:16-25; 1 Chronicles 21:15-28; 2 Chronicles 3:1). Their continued presence, even in a subordinate role, demonstrates the gradual and sometimes incomplete nature of Israelite settlement and assimilation.
