טָמֵא

(ṭä·mêʾ)

verb

To be or become ceremonially, morally, or ritually impure, thereby requiring purification or separation from holy things.

The Hebrew verb ṭāmēʾ describes a state of impurity, often with religious or ritual implications. This impurity is not necessarily sinful in itself, but it marks an individual or object as unsuitable for participation in religious rites or for contact with sacred spaces and objects. The concept of impurity is central to Levitical law, where various bodily discharges, contact with dead bodies, certain diseases, and other conditions render a person or object ṭāmēʾ.

While often ceremonial, ṭāmēʾ can also refer to moral defilement, particularly in prophetic literature and wisdom traditions. Idolatry, sexual immorality, and injustice are depicted as defiling practices that pollute the land and the people, leading to God's judgment. This moral dimension highlights that behind the ritual requirements for purity lies a deeper concern for holiness and separation from anything that contravenes God's character or will.

The ritual use of ṭāmēʾ emphasizes the distinction between the sacred and the profane, and the need for purity in approaching God. The various purification rituals prescribed in the Torah, such as washing, sacrifices, or periods of isolation, were designed to restore a person or object to a state of ritual purity, allowing them once again to participate in the life of the community and worship. The ongoing need for purification underscored the pervasive presence of impurity in a fallen world and the continual need for divine grace and cleansing.
