דָּן

(Dahn)

proper noun

Dan refers to one of Jacob's sons, the tribe descended from him, or the territory they inhabited.

The Hebrew term דָּן (Dan) appears frequently in the Old Testament, primarily serving as a proper noun with several related meanings. Its most fundamental meaning is the personal name of Dan, the fifth son of Jacob and Bilhah (Genesis 30:6). The narrative surrounding his birth connects his name to the root meaning "to judge" (דִּין, din), as Rachel exclaimed, "God has judged me...and has also heard my voice and given me a son."

Beyond the individual, Dan also designates the tribe that descended from this son. This tribe, like others, played a role in the unfolding history of Israel, including their exodus from Egypt, wilderness wanderings, and conquest of Canaan. The tribe of Dan is mentioned in various contexts, from tribal registrations and census accounts to their participation in battles and their allotted inheritance of land. The territory designated to the tribe of Dan is another significant referent of the term. This inheritance was initially located in a strategic area along the Mediterranean coast, but the Danites faced considerable challenges in securing and maintaining their allotted land, leading to their migration northward.

The most prominent geographical location associated with Dan is the city known as Dan in the northern part of Israel. This city, originally named Laish or Leshem, was conquered and renamed by the migrating Danites. The phrase "from Dan to Beersheba" became a common idiom to denote the full extent of the land of Israel, from its northernmost point to its southernmost. This phrase underscores the geographical significance of Dan in biblical thought. Sadly, the city of Dan also became a center for idolatry during the divided monarchy, notably under King Jeroboam I, who set up a golden calf there as an alternative worship site to Jerusalem.
