1And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars: I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and thou art dead.

1Write this to the messenger of the church in Sardis: These are the words of the one who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know everything you do. You have a reputation for being alive, but you are actually dead.

2Be thou watchful, and establish the things that remain, which were ready to die: for I have found no works of thine perfected before my God.

2Wake up! Strengthen what little you have left before it dies completely. I have found that your actions are not complete in the sight of my God.

3Remember therefore how thou hast received and didst hear; and keep it, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

3Remember the teaching you received and heard; obey it and turn from your sins. If you do not wake up, I will come to you like a thief, and you will have no idea what time I will arrive.

4But thou hast a few names in Sardis that did not defile their garments: and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy.

4Yet there are a few people in Sardis who have not stained their clothes with sin. They will walk with me dressed in white, because they are worthy.

5He that overcometh shall thus be arrayed in white garments; and I will in no wise blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

5Everyone who wins the victory will be dressed in white clothes. I will never erase their names from the book of life, and I will announce their names in the presence of my Father and his angels.

6He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

6Anyone who is willing to listen should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

7And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and none shall shut, and that shutteth and none openeth:

7Write this to the messenger of the church in Philadelphia: These are the words of the one who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens, no one can shut; and what he shuts, no one can open.

8I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name.

8I know everything you do. Look, I have put an open door in front of you that no one can close. I know you have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not reject my name.

9Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, of them that say they are Jews, and they are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

9Watch! I will take those who belong to Satan’s synagogue—those liars who claim to be Jews but are not—and I will make them bow down at your feet. They will realize that I have loved you.

10Because thou didst keep the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of trial, that hour which is to come upon the whole world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

10Since you have patiently obeyed my command to endure, I will also protect you from the time of testing that is coming to the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

11I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown.

11I am coming soon. Hold on tight to what you have, so that no one takes away your crown.

12He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out thence no more: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and mine own new name.

12I will make everyone who wins the victory a pillar in the temple of my God, and they will never have to leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God—the New Jerusalem, which comes down from heaven from my God. I will also write my own new name on them.

13He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

13Anyone who is willing to listen should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.

14And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God:

14Write this to the messenger of the church in Laodicea: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.

15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

15I know everything you do. You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were one or the other!

16So because thou art lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spew thee out of my mouth.

16But since you are merely lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art the wretched one and miserable and poor and blind and naked:

17You say, 'I am rich; I have everything I want and don't need a thing.' But you don't realize that you are actually miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.

18I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and that the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see.

18I advise you to buy gold from me that has been purified by fire so you can be truly rich. Buy white clothes from me so you can cover your shameful nakedness. And buy medicine for your eyes so you can see.

19As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

19I correct and discipline everyone I love. So, be serious about it and turn from your sins.

20Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

20Look! I am standing at the door and knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat a meal with them, and they will eat with me.

21He that overcometh, I will give to him to sit down with me in my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father in his throne.

21I will allow everyone who wins the victory to sit with me on my throne, just as I won the victory and sat down with my Father on his throne.

22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.

22Anyone who is willing to listen should listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.
