What Revelation 2:19 means

Jesus knows Thyatira’s works—marked by love, faith, ministry, and patience—and He notes with joy that their latter deeds surpass their first. Unlike Ephesus, their love is not fading; it is growing and producing service. This is a living church with increasing fruit. Christ delights to observe progress, not merely to point out faults. He sees love fueling ministry and endurance. Yet such vibrancy does not excuse dangerous compromise tolerated in their midst. He will soon address what undermines their health. Growth in some areas can coexist with negligence in others; the Lord commends sincerely to strengthen them for the coming correction.

Context

Following the solemn introduction (verse 18), this verse lays out Thyatira’s strengths, in contrast to Ephesus’ loss of love (verses 2–4). The commendation is significant: there is real spiritual life and growth. But the next verse (verse 20) will pivot to a serious charge—tolerating a false prophetess who leads servants into immorality and idolatry. The flow reflects Christ’s balanced evaluation: encouragement for what is good, exposure and remedy for what threatens it.

v.18And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like unto burnished brass:

v.19This passage

v.20But I have this against thee, that thou sufferest the woman Jezebel, who calleth herself a prophetess; and she teacheth and seduceth my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.
