1O Jehovah, thou God to whom vengeance belongeth, Thou God to whom vengeance belongeth, shine forth.

1O LORD, you are the God who punishes; O God, you to whom vengeance belongs, show your glory.

2Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: Render to the proudtheir desert.

2Rise up, O Judge of the earth, and give the proud people what they deserve.

3Jehovah, how long shall the wicked, How long shall the wicked triumph?

3How long, LORD, will the wicked be allowed to celebrate? How long will they continue to be happy?

4They prate, they speak arrogantly: All the workers of iniquity boast themselves.

4They pour out arrogant words; all these evildoers brag about themselves.

5They break in pieces thy people, O Jehovah, And afflict thy heritage.

5They crush your people, LORD, and cause suffering to those who belong to you.

6They slay the widow and the sojourner, And murder the fatherless.

6They kill widows and foreigners, and they murder orphans.

7And they say, Jehovah will not see, Neither will the God of Jacob consider.

7They say, 'The LORD does not see it; the God of Jacob doesn't even notice.'

8Consider, ye brutish among the people; And ye fools, when will ye be wise?

8Pay attention, you foolish people! You simple-minded ones, when will you finally understand?

9He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye, shall he not see?

9The one who made the ear, does he not hear? The one who formed the eye, does he not see?

10He that chastiseth the nations, shall not he correct, Evenhe that teacheth man knowledge?

10Does the one who disciplines the nations not correct them? Doesn't the one who teaches humans know everything?

11Jehovah knoweth the thoughts of man, That they are vanity.

11The LORD knows the thoughts of human beings; he knows they are just a puff of wind.

12Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Jehovah, And teachest out of thy law;

12Happy is the person you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law.

13That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, Until the pit be digged for the wicked.

13You give them relief from days of trouble until a pit is dug to trap the wicked.

14For Jehovah will not cast off his people, Neither will he forsake his inheritance.

14For the LORD will not reject his people, and he will never abandon those who belong to him.

15For judgment shall return unto righteousness; And all the upright in heart shall follow it.

15Justice will once again be based on what is right, and everyone with an honest heart will follow it.

16Who will rise up for me against the evil-doers? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?

16Who will stand up for me against these evil people? Who will take my side against those who do wrong?

17Unless Jehovah had been my help, My soul had soon dwelt in silence.

17If the LORD had not helped me, I would have soon lived in the silence of the grave.

18When I said, My foot slippeth; Thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, held me up.

18When I said, 'My foot is slipping,' your constant love, LORD, held me up.

19In the multitude of my thoughts within me Thy comforts delight my soul.

19When my mind is filled with many worries, your comfort brings me great joy.

20Shall the throne of wickedness have fellowship with thee, Which frameth mischief by statute?

20Can corrupt rulers be your allies—those who use the law to cause misery?

21They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, And condemn the innocent blood.

21They join together to attack the lives of the righteous and sentence innocent people to death.

22But Jehovah hath been my high tower, And my God the rock of my refuge.

22But the LORD has been my fortress; my God is the rock where I find safety.

23And he hath brought upon them their own iniquity, And will cut them off in their own wickedness; Jehovah our God will cut them off.

23He will turn their own sins back on them and destroy them for their evil; the LORD our God will wipe them out.
