1The praise of a canticle for David. He that dwelleth in the aid of the most High, shall abide under the protection of the God of Jacob.

1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place in all generations.

1A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, a habitation Thou--Thou hast been, To us--in generation and generation,

2He shall say to the Lord: Thou art my protector, and my refuge: my God, in him will I trust.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, and thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from eternity to eternity thou artGod.

2Before mountains were brought forth, And Thou dost form the earth and the world, Even from age unto age Thou <FI>art<Fi> God.

3For he hath delivered me from the snare of the hunters: and from the sharp word.

3 Thou makest [mortal] man to return to dust, and sayest, Return, children of men.

3Thou turnest man unto a bruised thing, And sayest, Turn back, ye sons of men.

4He will overshadow thee with his shoulders: and under his wings thou shalt trust.

4 For a thousand years, in thy sight, are as yesterday when it is past, and [as] a watch in the night.

4For a thousand years in Thine eyes <FI>are<Fi> as yesterday, For it passeth on, yea, a watch by night.

5His truth shall compass thee with a shield: thou shalt not be afraid of the terror of the night.

5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are [as] a sleep: in the morning they are like grass [that] groweth up:

5Thou hast inundated them, they are asleep, In the morning as grass he changeth.

6Of the arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil.

6 In the morning it flourisheth and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down and withereth.

6In the morning it flourisheth, and hath changed, At evening it is cut down, and hath withered.

7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee.

7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy fury are we troubled.

7For we were consumed in Thine anger, And in Thy fury we have been troubled.

8But thou shalt consider with thy eyes: and shalt see the reward of the wicked.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret [sins] in the light of thy countenance.

8Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, Our hidden things at the light of Thy face,

9Because thou, O Lord, art my hope: thou hast made the most High thy refuge.

9 For all our days pass away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a [passing] thought.

9For all our days pined away in Thy wrath, We consumed our years as a meditation.

10There shall no evil come to thee: nor shall the scourge come near thy dwelling.

10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if, by reason of strength, they be fourscore years, yet their pride is labour and vanity, for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

10Days of our years, in them <FI>are<Fi> seventy years, And if, by reason of might, eighty years, Yet <FI>is<Fi> their enlargement labour and vanity, For it hath been cut off hastily, and we fly away.

11For he hath given his angels charge over thee; to keep thee in all thy ways.

11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? and thy wrath according to the fear of thee?

11Who knoweth the power of Thine anger? And according to Thy fear--Thy wrath?

12In their hands they shall bear thee up: lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 So teach [us] to number our days, that we may acquire a wise heart.

12To number our days aright let <FI>us<Fi> know, And we bring the heart to wisdom.

13Thou shalt walk upon the asp and the basilisk: and thou shalt trample under foot the lion and the dragon.

13 Return, Jehovah: how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

13Turn back, O Jehovah, till when? And repent concerning Thy servants.

14Because he hoped in me I will deliver him: I will protect him because he hath known my name.

14 Satisfy us early with thy loving-kindness; that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

14Satisfy us at morn <FI>with<Fi> Thy kindness, And we sing and rejoice all our days.

15He shall cry to me, and I will hear him: I am with him in tribulation, I will deliver him, and I will glorify him.

15 Make us glad according to the days [wherein] thou hast afflicted us, according to the years [wherein] we have seen evil.

15Cause us to rejoice according to the days Wherein Thou hast afflicted us, The years we have seen evil.

16I will fill him with length of days; and I will shew him my salvation.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy majesty unto their sons.

16Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, And Thine honour on their sons.

17(not in this translation)

17 And let the beauty of Jehovah ourGod be upon us; and establish thou the work of our hands upon us: yea, the work of our hands, establish thou it.

17And let the pleasantness of Jehovah our God be upon us, And the work of our hands establish on us, Yea, the work of our hands establish it!
