1Lord, thou hast been our dwelling-place In all generations.

1Lord, you have been our home through every generation.

2Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

2Before the mountains were born or you created the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God.

3Thou turnest man to destruction, And sayest, Return, ye children of men.

3You turn people back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, you humans."

4For a thousand years in thy sight Are but as yesterday when it is past, And as a watch in the night.

4For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is gone, or like a few hours in the night.

5Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: In the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

5You sweep people away like a flood; they are like a dream. They are like grass that sprouts in the morning.

6In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; In the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

6In the morning it flourishes and grows, but by evening it is cut down and withers away.

7For we are consumed in thine anger, And in thy wrath are we troubled.

7We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your fury.

8Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

8You have placed our sins right before you—our secret sins are out in the open in the light of your presence.

9For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

9All our days fade away under your wrath; we end our years with a moan.

10The days of our years are threescore years and ten, Or even by reason of strength fourscore years; Yet is their pride but labor and sorrow; For it is soon gone, and we fly away.

10We live seventy years, or perhaps eighty if we are strong; yet even the best of them are filled with trouble and sorrow. They pass quickly, and we fly away.

11Who knoweth the power of thine anger, And thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto thee?

11Who truly understands the power of your anger? Your fury is as great as the fear that is owed to you.

12So teach us to number our days, That we may get us a heart of wisdom.

12Teach us to realize how short our lives are, so that we may become truly wise.

13Return, O Jehovah; how long? And let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

13Return to us, O Lord! How long will you be angry? Have compassion on your servants.

14Oh satisfy us in the morning with thy lovingkindness, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

14Satisfy us in the morning with your constant love, so that we may sing for joy and be glad all our lives.

15Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, And the years wherein we have seen evil.

15Give us joy for as many days as you have afflicted us, for all the years we have suffered trouble.

16Let thy work appear unto thy servants, And thy glory upon their children.

16Let us, your servants, see your mighty works again, and let our children see your glory.

17And let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; And establish thou the work of our hands upon us; Yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

17May the favor of the Lord our God be upon us. Make our efforts successful; yes, make the work of our hands succeed.
