1 I was crying to God with my voice; even to God with my voice, and he gave ear to me.
1Understanding for Asaph. Attend, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
1 My voice is untoGod, and I will cry; my voice is untoGod, and he will give ear unto me.
2In the day of my trouble, my heart was turned to the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night without resting; my soul would not be comforted.
2I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter propositions from the beginning.
2 In the day of my trouble, I sought the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not; my soul refused to be comforted.
3I will keep God in memory, with sounds of grief; my thoughts are troubled, and my spirit is overcome. (Selah.)
3How great things have we heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
3 I rememberedGod, and I moaned; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
4You keep my eyes from sleep; I am so troubled that no words come.
4They have not been hidden from their children, in another generation. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, and his wonders which he hath done.
4 Thou holdest open mine eyelids; I am full of disquiet and cannot speak.
5My thoughts go back to the days of the past, to the years which are gone.
5And he set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children:
5 I consider the days of old, the years of ancient times.
6The memory of my song comes back to me in the night; my thoughts are moving in my heart; my spirit is searching with care.
6That another generation might know them. The children that should be born and should rise up, and declare them to their children.
6 I remember my song in the night; I muse in mine own heart, and my spirit maketh diligent search.
7Will the Lord put me away for ever? will he be kind no longer?
7That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: and may seek his commandments.
7 Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
8Is his mercy quite gone for ever? has his word come to nothing?
8That they may not become like their fathers, a perverse and exasperating generation. A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
8 Hath his loving-kindness ceased for ever? hath [his] word come to an end from generation to generation?
9Has God put away the memory of his pity? are his mercies shut up by his wrath? (Selah.)
9The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: they have turned back in the day of battle.
9 HathGod forgotten to be gracious? or hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
10And I said, It is a weight on my spirit; but I will keep in mind the years of the right hand of the Most High.
10They kept not the covenant of God: and in his law they would not walk.
10 Then said I, This is my weakness: — the years of the right hand of the Most High
11I will keep in mind the works of Jah: I will keep the memory of your wonders in the past.
11And they forgot his benefits, and his wonders that he had shewn them.
11 Will I remember, — the works of Jah; for I will remember thy wonders of old,
12I will give thought to all your work, while my mind goes over your acts of power.
12Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.
12 And I will meditate upon all thy work, and muse upon thy doings.
13Your way, O God, is holy: what god is so great as our God?
13He divided the sea and brought them through: and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.
13 OGod, thy way is in the sanctuary: who is so great agod asGod?
14You are the God who does works of power: you have made your strength clear to the nations.
14And he conducted them with a cloud by day: and all the night with a light of fire.
14 Thou art theGod that doest wonders; thou hast declared thy strength among the peoples.
15With your arm you have made your people free, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. (Selah.)
15He struck the rock in the wilderness: and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.
15 Thou hast with [thine] arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
16The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you, they were in fear: even the deep was troubled.
16He brought forth water out of the rock: and made streams run down as rivers.
16 The waters saw thee, OGod, the waters saw thee; they trembled, yea, the depths were troubled:
17The clouds sent out water; the skies gave out a sound; truly, your arrows went far and wide.
17And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.
17 The thick clouds poured out water; the skies sent out a sound, yea, thine arrows went abroad:
18The voice of your thunder went rolling on; the world was flaming with the light of the storm; the earth was shaking.
18And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking meat for their desires.
18 The voice of thy thunder was in the whirlwind, lightnings lit up the world; the earth was troubled and it quaked.
19Your way was in the sea, and your road in the great waters; there was no knowledge of your footsteps.
19And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
19 Thy way is in the sea, and thy paths are in the great waters; and thy footsteps are not known.
20You were guiding your people like a flock, by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
20Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people?
20 Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
