1O God thou hast cast us off, thou hast broken us down; Thou hast been angry; oh restore us again.

1O God, you have rejected us and broken our defenses; you have been angry with us; please restore us now.

2Thou hast made the land to tremble; thou hast rent it: Heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh.

2You have made the earth shake and torn it open; heal its cracks, because the whole land is trembling.

3Thou hast showed thy people hard things: Thou hast made us to drink the wine of staggering.

3You have made your people go through hard times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger like drunks.

4Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, That it may be displayed because of the truth. [Selah

4You have raised a flag for those who honor you, to be displayed for the sake of the truth.

5That thy beloved may be delivered, Save with thy right hand, and answer us.

5Save us with your powerful right hand and answer our prayer, so that the people you love may be rescued.

6God hath spoken in his holiness: I will exult; I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

6God has spoken from his sanctuary: 'I will triumph! I will divide up the land of Shechem and measure out the Valley of Succoth.'

7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the defence of my head; Judah is my sceptre.

7'Gilead belongs to me, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet, and Judah is my royal scepter.'

8Moab is my washpot; Upon Edom will I cast my shoe: Philistia, shout thou because of me.

8'Moab is my washbasin; I throw my sandal on Edom to show I own it; I shout in victory over Philistia.'

9Who will bring me into the strong city? Who hath led me unto Edom?

9Who will bring me into the strong, walled city? Who will lead me to conquer Edom?

10Hast not thou, O God, cast us off? And thou goest not forth, O God, with our hosts.

10Is it not you, O God, who rejected us? Will you no longer march out with our armies?

11Give us help against the adversary; For vain is the help of man.

11Give us help against our enemies, because human help is worthless.

12Through God we shall do valiantly; For he it is that will tread down our adversaries.

12With God’s help we will fight bravely, for he is the one who will trample down our enemies.
