1Be merciful unto me, O God; for man would swallow me up: All the day long he fighting oppresseth me.

1Have mercy on me, O God, because people are attacking me; all day long they press their attack.

2Mine enemies would swallow me up all the day long; For they are many that fight proudly against me.

2My enemies harrass me all day long; many are fighting against me in their pride.

3What time I am afraid, I will put my trust in thee.

3When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

4In God (I will praise his word), In God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid; What can flesh do unto me?

4I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

5All the day long they wrest my words: All their thoughts are against me for evil.

5All day long they twist my words; all they think about is how to harm me.

6They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, They mark my steps, Even as they have waited for my soul.

6They band together and hide; they watch my every step, waiting for a chance to take my life.

7Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God.

7Do not let them escape for their evil deeds; in your anger, O God, bring these people down.

8Thou numberest my wanderings: Put thou my tears into thy bottle; Are they not in thy book?

8You have kept track of my wandering; you have collected my tears in your bottle. Aren't they recorded in your book?

9Then shall mine enemies turn back in the day that I call: This I know, that God is for me.

9My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help. This I know for certain: God is on my side.

10In God (I will praise his word), In Jehovah (I will praise his word),

10I praise God for his word; I praise the LORD for his word.

11In God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid; What can man do unto me?

11I trust in God, so I will not be afraid. What can a human being do to me?

12Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render thank-offerings unto thee.

12I will fulfill the vows I made to you, O God; I will offer my sacrifices of praise to you.

13For thou hast delivered my soul from death: Hast thou not delivered my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living?

13For you have saved me from death and kept my feet from slipping, so that I may walk in God’s presence, in the light of the living.
