Psalms 48

1Great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised, In the city of our God, in his holy mountain.

1The LORD is great and deserves high praise in the city of our God, on his holy mountain.

2Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, Is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, The city of the great King.

2Mount Zion is a beautiful height, the joy of the entire world; located in the far north, it is the city of the great King.

3God hath made himself known in her palaces for a refuge.

3God has shown himself to be a safe fortress within its palaces.

4For, lo, the kings assembled themselves, They passed by together.

4Look, the kings gathered together and marched forward as one.

5They saw it, then were they amazed; They were dismayed, they hasted away.

5But when they saw the city, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away in a panic.

6Trembling took hold of them there, Pain, as of a woman in travail.

6Trembling took hold of them right there, like the sudden pain of a woman giving birth.

7With the east wind Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish.

7You smash the great ships of Tarshish with a powerful wind from the east.

8As we have heard, so have we seen In the city of Jehovah of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. [Selah

8We had heard stories of it, and now we have seen it ourselves in the city of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, in the city of our God: God will keep this city secure forever.

9We have thought on thy lovingkindness, O God, In the midst of thy temple.

9O God, we meditate on your faithful love while we are inside your temple.

10As is thy name, O God, So is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: Thy right hand is full of righteousness.

10O God, your name is famous, and your praise reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is full of justice.

11Let mount Zion be glad, Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of thy judgments.

11Let Mount Zion be glad and the towns of Judah celebrate because of your fair rulings.

12Walk about Zion, and go round about her; Number the towers thereof;

12Walk all around Zion and count its towers.

13Mark ye well her bulwarks; Consider her palaces: That ye may tell it to the generation following.

13Look closely at its walls and examine its palaces, so that you can describe them to the next generation.

14For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death.
