1To the Overseer. --A Psalm of David. O the happiness of him Who is acting wisely unto the poor, In a day of evil doth Jehovah deliver him.
1Unto the end, understanding for the sons of Core.
1 Happy is the man who gives thought to the poor; the Lord will be his saviour in the time of trouble.
2Jehovah doth preserve him and revive him, He is happy in the land, And Thou givest him not into the will of his enemies.
2As the hart panteth after the fountains of water; so my soul panteth after thee, O God.
2The Lord will keep him safe, and give him life; the Lord will let him be a blessing on the earth, and will not give him into the hand of his haters.
3Jehovah supporteth on a couch of sickness, All his bed Thou hast turned in his weakness.
3My soul hath thirsted after the strong living God; when shall I come and appear before the face of God?
3The Lord will be his support on his bed of pain: by you will all his grief be turned to strength.
4I--I said, `O Jehovah, favour me, Heal my soul, for I did sin against Thee,'
4My tears have been my bread day and night, whilst it is said to me daily: Where is thy God?
4I said, Lord, have mercy on me; make my soul well, because my faith is in you.
5Mine enemies say evil of me: When he dieth--his name hath perished!
5These things I remembered, and poured out my soul in me: for I shall go over into the place of the wonderful tabernacle, even to the house of God: With the voice of joy and praise; the noise of one feasting.
5My haters say evil against me, When will he be dead, and his name come to an end?
6And if he came to see--vanity he speaketh, His heart gathereth iniquity to itself, He goeth out--at the street he speaketh.
6Why art thou sad, O my soul? and why dost thou trouble me? Hope in God, for I will still give praise to him: the salvation of my countenance,
6If one comes to see me, deceit is in his heart; he keeps a store of evil, which he makes public in every place.
7All hating me whisper together against me, Against me they devise evil to me:
7And my God. My soul is troubled within my self: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan and Hermoniim, from the little hill.
7All my haters are talking secretly together against me; they are designing my downfall.
8A thing of Belial is poured out on him, And because he lay down he riseth not again.
8Deep calleth on deep, at the noise of thy flood-gates. All thy heights and thy billows have passed over me.
8They say, He has an evil disease, which will not let him go: and now that he is down he will not get up again.
9Even mine ally, in whom I trusted, One eating my bread, made great the heel against me,
9In the daytime the Lord hath commanded his mercy; and a canticle to him in the night. With me is prayer to the God of my life.
9Even my dearest friend, in whom I had faith, who took bread with me, is turned against me.
10And Thou, Jehovah, favour me, And cause me to rise, And I give recompence to them.
10I will say to God: Thou art my support. Why hast thou forgotten me? and why go I mourning, whilst my enemy afflicteth me?
10But you, O Lord, have mercy on me, lifting me up, so that I may give them their punishment.
11By this I have known, That Thou hast delighted in me, Because my enemy shouteth not over me.
11Whilst my bones are broken, my enemies who trouble me have reproached me; Whilst they say to me day by day: Where is thy God?
11By this I see that you have pleasure in me, because my hater does not overcome me.
12As to me, in mine integrity, Thou hast taken hold upon me, And causest me to stand before Thee to the age.
12Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why dost thou disquiet me? Hope thou in God, for I will still give praise to him: the salvation of my countenance, and my God.
12And as for me, you are my support in my righteousness, giving me a place before your face for ever.
