1I waited patiently for Jehovah; And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

1I waited and waited for the LORD; he turned toward me and heard my cry for help.

2He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay; And he set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

2He pulled me out of a terrifying pit and out of the thick mud; he set my feet on a solid rock and gave me a steady place to walk.

3And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, And shall trust in Jehovah.

3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many people will see what he did and be amazed, and they will put their trust in the LORD.

4Blessed is the man that maketh Jehovah his trust, And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

4Blessed is the person who makes the LORD their trust, and does not look to the proud or to those who follow after lies.

5Many, O Jehovah my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward: They cannot be set in order unto thee; If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered.

5LORD my God, you have done many wonderful things, and your plans for us are many. No one can compare to you; if I tried to list them all, there would be too many to count.

6Sacrifice and offering thou hast no delight in; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt-offering and sin-offering hast thou not required.

6You did not want animal sacrifices or grain offerings, but you have opened my ears to listen. You did not demand burnt offerings or sacrifices for sin.

7Then said I, Lo, I am come; In the roll of the book it is written of me:

7Then I said, 'Look, I have come; it is written about me in the scroll of the book.'

8I delight to do thy will, O my God; Yea, thy law is within my heart.

8I love to do what you want, my God; your law is deep within my heart.

9I have proclaimed glad tidings of righteousness in the great assembly; Lo, I will not refrain my lips, O Jehovah, thou knowest.

9I have told the good news of your justice in the large gathering of people; look, I will not keep my mouth shut, as you know, LORD.

10I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great assembly.

10I have not kept your righteousness hidden in my heart. I have talked about how faithful you are and how you save. I have not hidden your constant love and truth from the great assembly.

11Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Jehovah; Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

11Do not withhold your deep mercy from me, LORD; let your constant love and truth always protect me.

12For innumerable evils have compassed me about; Mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of my head; And my heart hath failed me.

12For countless troubles have surrounded me. My sins have caught up with me until I can't even see the way out; they are more than the hairs on my head, and I have lost all courage.

13Be pleased, O Jehovah, to deliver me: Make haste to help me, O Jehovah.

13Please, LORD, come and rescue me; hurry, LORD, and help me.

14Let them be put to shame and confounded together That seek after my soul to destroy it: Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor That delight in my hurt.

14Let those who are trying to kill me be completely shamed and confused. Let those who want to hurt me be driven back in disgrace.

15Let them be desolate by reason of their shame That say unto me, Aha, aha.

15Let those who say, 'Aha, aha!' to mock me be horrified by their own shame.

16Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: Let such as love thy salvation say continually, Jehovah be magnified.

16But let all who look for you be happy and glad because of you. Let those who love your salvation always say, 'The LORD is great!'

17But I am poor and needy; Yetthe Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; Make no tarrying, O my God.

17As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord is thinking of me. You are my help and the one who rescues me; my God, do not delay.
