Psalms 38

1O Jehovah, rebuke me not in thy wrath; Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

1Lord, do not correct me while you are angry, and do not discipline me in your burning rage.

2For thine arrows stick fast in me, And thy hand presseth me sore.

2For your arrows have struck deep into me, and your hand presses down on me heavily.

3There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; Neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

3Because of your anger, there is no health in my body; my bones are not at rest because of my sin.

4For mine iniquities are gone over my head: As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

4My guilt has overwhelmed me; it is like a burden too heavy for me to carry.

5My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, Because of my foolishness.

5My wounds stink and are festering because of my foolish mistakes.

6I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

6I am bent over and brought very low; I walk around mourning all day long.

7For my loins are filled with burning; And there is no soundness in my flesh.

7My body is filled with a burning pain, and there is no health left in my flesh.

8I am faint and sore bruised: I have groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

8I am exhausted and completely crushed; I groan because of the deep distress in my heart.

9Lord, all my desire is before thee; And my groaning is not hid from thee.

9Lord, all my longings are known to you; you hear every one of my sighs.

10My heart throbbeth, my strength faileth me: As for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me.

10My heart beats wildly, my strength is gone, and even the light has left my eyes.

11My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand afar off.

11My friends and companions avoid me because of my sickness, and my family stays far away.

12They also that seek after my life lay snares for me; And they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, And meditate deceits all the day long.

12Those who want me dead set traps for me; those who want to hurt me talk about my ruin and plot lies all day long.

13But I, as a deaf man, hear not; And I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

13But I am like a deaf man who cannot hear, and like a person who cannot speak and does not open his mouth.

14Yea, I am as a man that heareth not, And in whose mouth are no reproofs.

14Yes, I have become like a man who does not hear anything, whose mouth has no reply.

15For in thee, O Jehovah, do I hope: Thou wilt answer, O Lord my God.

15For I wait for you, Lord; you will answer me, O Lord my God.

16For I said, Lest they rejoice over me: When my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

16I prayed, 'Do not let them gloat over me, or brag when my foot slips.'

17For I am ready to fall, And my sorrow is continually before me.

17For I am about to collapse, and my pain is always with me.

18For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

18I will confess my guilt; I am deeply troubled by my sin.

19But mine enemies are lively, and are strong; And they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied.

19But my enemies are healthy and strong; many people hate me for no reason at all.

20They also that render evil for good Are adversaries unto me, because I follow the thing that is good.

20Those who pay back my good with evil attack me because I try to do what is right.

21Forsake me not, O Jehovah: O my God, be not far from me.

21Do not abandon me, Lord; O my God, do not stay far away from me.

22Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation.

22Hurry to help me, O Lord, my Savior.
