1Strive thou, O Jehovah, with them that strive with me: Fight thou against them that fight against me.
1Lord, oppose those who oppose me; fight against those who fight against me.
2Take hold of shield and buckler, And stand up for my help.
2Pick up your shields, both large and small, and stand up to help me.
3Draw out also the spear, and stop the way against them that pursue me: Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.
3Lift up your spear and javelin against those who chase me. Tell me personally, 'I am the one who saves you.'
4Let them be put to shame and brought to dishonor that seek after my soul: Let them be turned back and confounded that devise my hurt.
4May those who are trying to kill me be disgraced and humiliated. May those who plan to harm me be driven back in confusion.
5Let them be as chaff before the wind, And the angel of Jehovah drivingthemon.
5Let them be like husks of grain blown by the wind, with the angel of the Lord driving them away.
6Let their way be dark and slippery, And the angel of Jehovah pursuing them.
6Let their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the Lord chasing them down.
7For without cause have they hid for me their netina pit; Without cause have they digged a pit for my soul.
7For no reason they hid a net in a pit for me; for no reason they dug a trap to take my life.
8Let destruction come upon him unawares; And let his net that he hath hid catch himself: With destruction let him fall therein.
8Let ruin catch them by surprise; let the very net they hid tangle them up. Let them fall into their own destruction.
9And my soul shall be joyful in Jehovah: It shall rejoice in his salvation.
9Then I will be full of joy in the Lord; I will celebrate because he rescued me.
10All my bones shall say, Jehovah, who is like unto thee, Who deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, Yea, the poor and the needy from him that robbeth him?
10From the bottom of my heart I will say, 'Lord, who is like you? You protect the helpless from those who are too strong for them, and the poor and needy from those who rob them.'
11Unrighteous witnesses rise up; They ask me of things that I know not.
11Cruel witnesses stand up to testify; they accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.
12They reward me evil for good, Tothe bereaving of my soul.
12They pay me back evil for the good I have done, leaving me feeling abandoned and alone.
13But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; And my prayer returned into mine own bosom.
13Yet when they were sick, I wore clothes of mourning. I humbled myself by fasting, and I prayed for them with all my heart.
14I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother: I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother.
14I went about grieving as if for a friend or a brother; I bowed my head in sadness as if I were crying for my own mother.
15But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: The abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; They did tear me, and ceased not:
15But when I stumbled, they gathered together and cheered. People I didn't even know gathered to attack me; they slandered me without stopping.
16Like the profane mockers in feasts, They gnashed upon me with their teeth.
16Like godless mockers at a feast, they ground their teeth at me in anger.
17Lord, how long wilt thou look on? Rescue my soul from their destructions, My darling from the lions.
17Lord, how long will you just watch this happen? Save my life from their attacks; save my precious life from these lions.
18I will give thee thanks in the great assembly: I will praise thee among much people.
18I will thank you in the great gathering of your people; I will praise you in front of the whole crowd.
19Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; Neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.
19Don't let my lying enemies gloat over me. Don't let those who hate me for no reason smirk at my trouble.
20For they speak not peace; But they devise deceitful words against them that are quiet in the land.
20They don't talk about peace; instead, they plot ways to deceive those who live quietly in the land.
21Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me; They said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.
21They open their mouths wide to shout at me, saying, 'Aha! Aha! We saw you do it with our own eyes!'
22Thou hast seen it, O Jehovah; keep not silence: O Lord, be not far from me.
22Lord, you have seen this, so do not stay silent. Lord, do not stay far away from me.
23Stir up thyself, and awake to the justice due unto me, Even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.
23Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord.
24Judge me, O Jehovah my God, according to thy righteousness; And let them not rejoice over me.
24Declare me innocent, Lord my God, because you are fair. Do not let them laugh at my defeat.
25Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it: Let them not say, We have swallowed him up.
25Don't let them say to themselves, 'Aha! This is exactly what we wanted!' Don't let them say, 'We have swallowed him whole!'
26Let them be put to shame and confounded together that rejoice at my hurt: Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor that magnify themselves against me.
26May everyone who cheers at my trouble be humiliated and confused. May those who brag at my expense be covered with shame and disgrace.
27Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favor my righteous cause: Yea, let them say continually, Jehovah be magnified, Who hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.
27But let those who want justice for me shout for joy and be glad. May they always say, 'The Lord be praised, for he loves to see his servant do well.'
