Psalms 140

1Deliver me, O Jehovah, from the evil man; Preserve me from the violent man:

1Rescue me, Lord, from evil people; protect me from those who are violent.

2Who devise mischiefs in their heart; Continually do they gather themselves together for war.

2They plan wicked things in their hearts and stir up conflict all day long.

3They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent; Adders’ poison is under their lips. [Selah

3Their tongues are as sharp as a snake's; poison like a cobra's is behind their lips.

4Keep me, O Jehovah, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from the violent man: Who have purposed to thrust aside my steps.

4Lord, keep me out of the hands of the wicked; protect me from the violent who plan to trip me up.

5The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; They have spread a net by the wayside; They have set gins for me. [Selah

5Proud people have hidden a trap for me; they have spread out a net of ropes and set snares along my path.

6I said unto Jehovah, Thou art my God: Give ear unto the voice of my supplications, O Jehovah.

6I said to the Lord, 'You are my God.' Lord, listen to my cry for mercy.

7O Jehovah the Lord, the strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

7Sovereign Lord, my strong savior, you protect my head on the day of battle.

8Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked; Further not his evil device, lest they exalt themselves. [Selah

8Lord, do not give the wicked what they want; do not let their evil plans succeed, or they will become even more proud.

9As for the head of those that compass me about, Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

9As for the heads of those surrounding me, let the trouble they talked about for others fall on them.

10Let burning coals fall upon them: Let them be cast into the fire, Into deep pits, whence they shall not rise.

11An evil speaker shall not be established in the earth: Evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

11Do not let liars settle in the land; let disaster hunt down the violent to destroy them.

12I know that Jehovah will maintain the cause of the afflicted, And justice for the needy.

12I know that the Lord will defend the cause of the poor and bring justice to the needy.

13Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: The upright shall dwell in thy presence.

13Surely the righteous will praise your name, and those who do right will live in your presence.
