1Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth up, Let Israel now say,

1People have attacked me many times since I was young—now let Israel say it:

2Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth up: Yet they have not prevailed against me.

2People have attacked me many times since my youth, but they have never defeated me.

3The plowers plowed upon my back; They made long their furrows.

3The attackers plowed deep into my back like they were making long rows in a field.

4Jehovah is righteous: He hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

4But the LORD is fair and good; he has cut the ropes that the wicked used to trap me.

5Let them be put to shame and turned backward, All they that hate Zion.

5May everyone who hates Zion be humiliated and forced to run away in defeat.

6Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, Which withereth before it groweth up;

6May they be like grass growing on a roof, which dries up before it can even grow tall.

7Wherewith the reaper filleth not his hand, Nor he that bindeth sheaves, his bosom:

7A harvester cannot even fill his hand with it, and no one making bundles can fill his arms with it.

8Neither do they that go by say, The blessing of Jehovah be upon you; We bless you in the name of Jehovah.

8No one passing by will say to them, 'May the LORD's blessing be on you,' or, 'We bless you in the name of the LORD.'
