1A gradual canticle. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Sion: he shall not be moved for ever that dwelleth
1 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side (let Israel now say);
1A Song of the Ascents, by David. Save <FI>for<Fi> Jehovah--who hath been for us, (Pray, let Israel say),
2In Jerusalem. Mountains are round about it: so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth now and for ever.
2If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men came up against us;
2Save <FI>for<Fi> Jehovah--who hath been for us, In the rising up of man against us,
3For the Lord will not leave the rod of sinners upon the lot of the just: that the just may not stretch forth their hands to iniquity.
3They would have made a meal of us while still living, in the heat of their wrath against us:
3Then alive they had swallowed us up, In the burning of their anger against us,
4Do good, O Lord, to those that are good, and to the upright of heart.
4We would have been covered by the waters; the streams would have gone over our soul;
4Then the waters had overflowed us, The stream passed over our soul,
5But such as turn aside into bonds, the Lord shall lead out with the workers of iniquity: peace upon Israel.
5Yes, the waters of pride would have gone over our soul.
5Then passed over our soul had the proud waters.
6(not in this translation)
6Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be wounded by their teeth.
6Blessed <FI>is<Fi> Jehovah who hath not given us, A prey to their teeth.
