1O give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever.

1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his faithful love lasts forever.

2Let the redeemed of Jehovah sayso, Whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the adversary,

2Let the people the LORD has rescued speak out—those he saved from the power of the enemy,

3And gathered out of the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south.

3and gathered from many lands, from the east and west, from the north and south.

4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way; They found no city of habitation.

4Some wandered in the empty desert; they could not find a city to live in.

5Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them.

5They were hungry and thirsty, and they felt their lives slipping away.

6Then they cried unto Jehovah in their trouble, And he delivered them out of their distresses,

6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress.

7He led them also by a straight way, That they might go to a city of habitation.

7He led them on a straight path to a city where they could settle.

8Oh that men would praise Jehovah for his lovingkindness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!

8Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love and for the wonderful things he does for people.

9For he satisfieth the longing soul, And the hungry soul he filleth with good.

9For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

10Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, Being bound in affliction and iron,

10Some sat in darkness and deepest shadow, prisoners suffering in iron chains.

11Because they rebelled against the words of God, And contemned the counsel of the Most High:

11This was because they rebelled against God’s words and rejected the advice of the Most High.

12Therefore he brought down their heart with labor; They fell down, and there was none to help.

12So he humbled them with hard labor; they tripped and fell, and no one was there to help.

13Then they cried unto Jehovah in their trouble, And he saved them out of their distresses.

13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And brake their bonds in sunder.

14He brought them out of darkness and deepest shadow and snapped their chains apart.

15Oh that men would praise Jehovah for his lovingkindness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!

15Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love and for the wonderful things he does for people.

16For he hath broken the gates of brass, And cut the bars of iron in sunder.

16For he smashed the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars.

17Fools because of their transgression, And because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

17Some were fools; they suffered because of their rebellious ways and their sins.

18Their soul abhorreth all manner of food; And they draw near unto the gates of death.

18They couldn't stand the thought of food and came close to the gates of death.

19Then they cry unto Jehovah in their trouble, And he saveth them out of their distresses.

19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

20He sendeth his word, and healeth them, And delivereth them from their destructions.

20He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave.

21Oh that men would praise Jehovah for his lovingkindness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!

21Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love and for the wonderful things he does for people.

22And let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare his works with singing.

22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and tell about his deeds with songs of joy.

23They that go down to the sea in ships, That do business in great waters;

23Some went out on the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters.

24These see the works of Jehovah, And his wonders in the deep.

24They saw the works of the LORD and his wonders in the deep ocean.

25For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, Which lifteth up the waves thereof.

25He spoke and stirred up a storm that blew up high waves.

26They mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the depths: Their soul melteth away because of trouble.

26The sailors were tossed up to the sky and sank down to the depths; their courage melted away in the danger.

27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end.

27They reeled and staggered like drunks; they were at their wits' end.

28Then they cry unto Jehovah in their trouble, And he bringeth them out of their distresses.

28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.

29He maketh the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof are still.

29He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves of the sea.

30Then are they glad because they are quiet; So he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

30They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to the harbor they wanted.

31Oh that men would praise Jehovah for his lovingkindness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!

31Let them thank the LORD for his faithful love and for the wonderful things he does for people.

32Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people, And praise him in the seat of the elders.

32Let them honor him in the great assembly and praise him in the meeting of the leaders.

33He turneth rivers into a wilderness, And watersprings into a thirsty ground;

33He turns rivers into a desert and flowing springs into thirsty ground.

34A fruitful land into a salt desert, For the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

34He turns fertile land into a salty waste because of the wickedness of the people living there.

35He turneth a wilderness into a pool of water, And a dry land into watersprings.

35He turns the desert into pools of water and dry ground into flowing springs.

36And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, That they may prepare a city of habitation,

36He settles the hungry there so they can build a city to live in.

37And sow fields, and plant vineyards, And get them fruits of increase.

37They sow fields and plant vineyards that produce a huge harvest.

38He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; And he suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

38He blesses them so that they increase greatly, and he does not let their herds dwindle.

39Again, they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.

39But when they are few and humbled by oppression, trouble, and sorrow,

40He poureth contempt upon princes, And causeth them to wander in the waste, where there is no way.

40he pours out contempt on their leaders and makes them wander in trackless wastes.

41Yet setteth he the needy on high from affliction, And maketh him families like a flock.

41But he lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families grow like flocks of sheep.

42The upright shall see it, and be glad; And all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

42Godly people see this and are glad, but all the wicked are silenced.

43Whoso is wise will give heed to these things; And they will consider the lovingkindnesses of Jehovah.

43Whoever is wise will think about these things and consider the faithful love of the LORD.
