1Unto the end. A psalm to David.
1Why, Jehovah, standest thou afar off? [Why] hidest thou thyself in times of distress?
1Why standest thou afar off, O Jehovah? Why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?
2In the Lord I put my trust: how then do you say to my soul: Get thee away from hence to the mountain, like a sparrow.
2 The wicked, in his pride, doth hotly pursue the afflicted. They shall be taken in the devices that they have imagined.
2In the pride of the wicked the poor is hotly pursued; Let them be taken in the devices that they have conceived.
3For, lo, the wicked have bent their bow: they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, to shoot in the dark the upright of heart.
3 For the wicked boasteth of his soul's desire, and he blesseth the covetous; he contemneth Jehovah.
3For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, And the covetous renounceth, yea, contemneth Jehovah.
4For they have destroyed the things which thou hast made: but what has the just man done?
4 The wicked [saith], in the haughtiness of his countenance, He doth not search out: all his thoughts are, There is noGod!
4The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, saith, He will not requireit. All his thoughts are, There is no God.
5The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven. His eyes look on the poor man: his eyelids examine the sons of men.
5 His ways always succeed; thy judgments are far above out of his sight; [as for] all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.
5His ways are firm at all times; Thy judgments are far above out of his sight: As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.
6The Lord trieth the just and the wicked: but he that loveth iniquity, hateth his own soul.
6 He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved; from generation to generation I shall be in no adversity.
6He saith in his heart, I shall not be moved; To all generations I shall not be in adversity.
7He shall rain snares upon sinners: fire and brimstone, and storms of winds, shall be the portion of their cup.
7 His mouth is full of cursing, and deceit, and oppression; under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
7His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression: Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.
8For the Lord is just, and hath loved justice: his countenance hath beheld righteousness.
8 He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; in the secret places doth he slay the innocent: his eyes watch for the wretched.
8He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; In the secret places doth he murder the innocent; His eyes are privily set against the helpless.
9(not in this translation)
9 He lieth in wait secretly, like a lion in his thicket; he lieth in wait to catch the afflicted: he doth catch the afflicted, drawing him into his net.
9He lurketh in secret as a lion in his covert; He lieth in wait to catch the poor: He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net.
10(not in this translation)
10 He croucheth, he boweth down, that the wretched may fall by his strong ones.
10He croucheth, he boweth down, And the helpless fall by his strong ones.

11 He saith in his heart,God hath forgotten, he hideth his face, he will never see [it].
11He saith in his heart: God hath forgotten; He hideth his face, he will never see it.
12(not in this translation)
12 Arise, Jehovah; OGod, lift up thy hand: forget not the afflicted.
12Arise, O Jehovah; O God, lift up thy hand: Forget not the poor.
13(not in this translation)
13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemnGod? He hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require [it].
13Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God, And say in his heart, Thou wilt not requireit?
14(not in this translation)
14 Thou hast seen [it], for thou thyself beholdest trouble and vexation, to requite by thy hand. The wretched committeth himself unto thee; thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.
14Thou hast seenit; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: The helpless committeth himself unto thee; Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.
15(not in this translation)
15 Break thou the arm of the wicked, and as for the evil man, seek out his wickedness [till] thou find none.
15Break thou the arm of the wicked; And as for the evil man, seek out his wickedness till thou find none.

16 Jehovah is King for ever and ever: the nations have perished out of his land.
