1Why do you keep far away, O Lord? why are you not to be seen in times of trouble?

1Why, Jehovah, dost Thou stand at a distance? Thou dost hide in times of adversity,

1Unto the end. A psalm to David.

2The evil-doer in his pride is cruel to the poor; let him be taken by the tricks of his invention.

2Through the pride of the wicked, Is the poor inflamed, They are caught in devices that they devised.

2In the Lord I put my trust: how then do you say to my soul: Get thee away from hence to the mountain, like a sparrow.

3For the evil-doer is lifted up because of the purpose of his heart, and he whose mind is fixed on wealth is turned away from the Lord, saying evil against him.

3Because the wicked hath boasted Of the desire of his soul, And a dishonest gainer he hath blessed, He hath despised Jehovah.

3For, lo, the wicked have bent their bow: they have prepared their arrows in the quiver, to shoot in the dark the upright of heart.

4The evil-doer in his pride says, God will not make a search. All his thoughts are, There is no God.

4The wicked according to the height of his face, inquireth not. `God is not!' <FI>are<Fi> all his devices.

4For they have destroyed the things which thou hast made: but what has the just man done?

5His ways are ever fixed; your decisions are higher than he may see: as for his haters, they are as nothing to him.

5Pain do his ways at all times, On high <FI>are<Fi> Thy judgments before him, All his adversaries--he puffeth at them.

5The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven. His eyes look on the poor man: his eyelids examine the sons of men.

6He has said in his heart, I will not be moved: through all generations I will never be in trouble.

6He hath said in his heart, `I am not moved,' To generation and generation not in evil.

6The Lord trieth the just and the wicked: but he that loveth iniquity, hateth his own soul.

7His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and false words: under his tongue are evil purposes and dark thoughts.

7Of oaths his mouth is full, And deceits, and fraud: Under his tongue <FI>is<Fi> perverseness and iniquity,

7He shall rain snares upon sinners: fire and brimstone, and storms of winds, shall be the portion of their cup.

8He is waiting in the dark places of the towns: in the secret places he puts to death those who have done no wrong: his eyes are secretly turned against the poor.

8He doth sit in an ambush of the villages, In secret places he doth slay the innocent. His eyes for the afflicted watch secretly,

8For the Lord is just, and hath loved justice: his countenance hath beheld righteousness.

9He keeps himself in a secret place like a lion in his hole, waiting to put his hands on the poor man, and pulling him into his net.

9He lieth in wait in a secret place, as a lion in a covert. He lieth in wait to catch the poor, He catcheth the poor, drawing him into his net.
