1A wise son is a lover of teaching, but the ears of the haters of authority are shut to sharp words.
1A wise son heareth the doctrine of his father: but he that is a scorner, heareth not when he is reproved.
2A man will get good from the fruit of his lips, but the desire of the false is for violent acts.
2Of the fruit of his own month shall a man be filled with good things: but the soul of transgressors is wicked.
3He who keeps a watch on his mouth keeps his life; but he whose lips are open wide will have destruction.
3He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his soul: but he that hath no guard on his speech shall meet with evils.
4The hater of work does not get his desires, but the soul of the hard workers will be made fat.
4The sluggard willeth, and willeth not: but the soul of them that work, shall be made fat.
5The upright man is a hater of false words: the evil-doer gets a bad name and is put to shame.
5The just shall hate a lying word: but the wicked confoundeth, and shall be confounded.
6Righteousness keeps safe him whose way is without error, but evil-doers are overturned by sin.
6Justice keepeth the way of the innocent: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
7A man may be acting as if he had wealth, but have nothing; another may seem poor, but have great wealth.
7One is as it were rich, when he hath nothing and another is as it were poor, when he hath great riches.
8A man will give his wealth in exchange for his life; but the poor will not give ear to sharp words.
8The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but he that is poor, beareth not reprehension.
9There is a glad dawn for the upright man, but the light of the sinner will be put out.
9The light of the just giveth joy: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
10The only effect of pride is fighting; but wisdom is with the quiet in spirit.
10Among the proud there are always contentions: but they that do all things with counsel, are ruled by wisdom.
11Wealth quickly got will become less; but he who gets a store by the work of his hands will have it increased.
11Substance got in haste shall be diminished: but that which by little and little is gathered with the hand, shall increase.
12Hope put off is a weariness to the heart; but when what is desired comes, it is a tree of life.
12Hope that is deferred afflicteth the soul: desire when it cometh, is a tree of life.
13He who makes sport of the word will come to destruction, but the respecter of the law will be rewarded.
13Whosoever speaketh ill of any thing, bindeth himself for the time to come: but he that feareth the commandment, shall dwell in peace. Deceitful souls go astray in sins: the just are merciful, and shew mercy.
14The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning men away from the nets of death.
14The law of the wise is a fountain of life, that he may decline from the ruin of death.
15Wise behaviour gets approval, but the way of the false is their destruction.
15Good instruction shall give grace: in the way of scorners is a deep pit.
16A sharp man does everything with knowledge, but a foolish man makes clear his foolish thoughts.
16The prudent man doth all things with counsel: but he that is a fool, layeth open his folly.
17A man taking false news is a cause of trouble, but he who gives news rightly makes things well.
17The messenger of the wicked shall fall into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.
18Need and shame will be the fate of him who is uncontrolled by training; but he who takes note of teaching will be honoured.
18Poverty and shame to him that refuseth instruction: but he that yieldeth to reproof shall be glorified.
19To get one's desire is sweet to the soul, but to give up evil is disgusting to the foolish.
19The desire that is accomplished, delighteth the soul: fools hate them that flee from evil things.
20Go with wise men and be wise: but he who keeps company with the foolish will be broken.
20He that walketh with the wise, shall be wise: a friend of fools shall become like to them.
21Evil will overtake sinners, but the upright will be rewarded with good.
21Evil pursueth sinners: and to the just good shall be repaid.
22The heritage of the good man is handed down to his children's children; and the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the upright man.
22The good man leaveth heirs, sons, and grandsons: and the substance of the sinner is kept for the just.
23There is much food in the ploughed land of the poor; but it is taken away by wrongdoing.
23Much food is in the tillage of fathers: but for others it is gathered without judgment.
