1The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning Edom: We have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, saying, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
1This is the vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord GOD says about the land of Edom: We have heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger has been sent among the nations to say, 'Get ready! Let us go to war against Edom!'
2Behold, I have made thee small among the nations: thou art greatly despised.
2Look, I will make you weak among the nations; you will be greatly despised.
3The pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
3Your own pride has deceived you, you who live in the hollows of the rocks and make your home on the heights. You say to yourself, 'Who can pull me down to the ground?'
4Though thou mount on high as the eagle, and though thy nest be set among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.
4Even if you soar high like an eagle and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there, says the LORD.
5If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night (how art thou cut off!), would they not steal only till they had enough? if grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes?
5If thieves came to you, or robbers by night—oh, what disaster awaits you!—would they not steal only what they wanted? If workers came to pick your grapes, wouldn't they leave a few behind?
6How are the things of Esau searched! how are his hidden treasures sought out!
6But how Esau will be completely stripped! His hidden treasures will all be found and taken.
7All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee on thy way, even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread lay a snare under thee: there is no understanding in him.
7All your allies will chase you out of the land. The friends you trusted will deceive you and overpower you. The people who eat your bread will set a trap for you, and you won't even realize it.
8Shall I not in that day, saith Jehovah, destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
8On that day, says the LORD, I will destroy the wise men of Edom and wipe out all the intelligence from the mountains of Esau.
9And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one may be cut off from the mount of Esau by slaughter.
9Your soldiers in Teman will be terrified, so that everyone in the mountains of Esau will be killed in the slaughter.
10For the violence done to thy brother Jacob, shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
10Because of the violence you did to your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame and destroyed forever.
11In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that strangers carried away his substance, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
11You stood by and did nothing while strangers carried off his wealth, while foreigners entered his gates and gambled for Jerusalem. You were just like one of them.
12But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.
12You should not have gloated over your brother's misfortune. You should not have rejoiced when the people of Judah were being destroyed. You should not have bragged so much in the time of their trouble.
13Enter not into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, look not thou on their affliction in the day of their calamity, neither lay ye hands on their substance in the day of their calamity.
13You should not have entered the gates of my people in the day of their disaster. You should not have stared at their misery or seized their wealth when they were suffering.
14And stand thou not in the crossway, to cut off those of his that escape; and deliver not up those of his that remain in the day of distress.
14You should not have stood at the crossroads to kill those trying to escape. You should not have captured the survivors and handed them over in the day of their distress.
15For the day of Jehovah is near upon all the nations: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy dealing shall return upon thine own head.
15The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done to others, it will be done to you. Your own deeds will come back on your own head.
16For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink continually; yea, they shall drink, and swallow down, and shall be as though they had not been.
16Just as you drank in judgment on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink. They will drink and gulp it down until they disappear as if they had never existed.
17But in mount Zion there shall be those that escape, and it shall be holy; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
17But on Mount Zion there will be a place of escape, and it will be holy. The descendants of Jacob will reclaim their inheritance.
18And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall burn among them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining to the house of Esau; for Jehovah hath spoken it.
18The people of Jacob will be a fire and the people of Joseph a flame, but the people of Esau will be like dry stalks of grain. They will be set on fire and burned up. There will be no survivors from the house of Esau, for the LORD has spoken.
19And they of the South shall possess the mount of Esau, and they of the lowland the Philistines; and they shall possess the field of Ephraim, and the field of Samaria; and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
19People from the southern desert will occupy the mountains of Esau. People from the foothills will take over the land of the Philistines. They will possess the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and the tribe of Benjamin will take Gilead.百姓
20And the captives of this host of the children of Israel, that are among the Canaanites, shall possess even unto Zarephath; and the captives of Jerusalem, that are in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the South.
20The exiles from Israel will return and take the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath. The exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will take over the towns of the southern desert.
