1And the heads of the fathers’housesof the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ houses of the children of Israel:
1The family leaders from the clan of Gilead, who was the son of Machir and grandson of Manasseh (part of the descendants of Joseph), came to talk to Moses and the other leaders of the Israelite families.
2and they said, Jehovah commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by Jehovah to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters.
2They said, 'The LORD commanded you, my lord, to give the land to the Israelites by drawing lots. The LORD also commanded you to give the land belonging to our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.'
3And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.
3'But if these daughters marry men from other tribes of Israel, their land will be taken away from our family's property. It will become part of the land belonging to the tribe they marry into, and we will lose part of the land allotted to us.'
4And when the jubilee of the children of Israel shall be, then will their inheritance be added unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong: so will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.
4'Even when the Year of Jubilee comes for the people of Israel, their land will stay with the tribe they married into. In this way, their inheritance will be permanently taken away from our ancestral tribal land.'
5And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of Jehovah, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaketh right.
5Then Moses gave this command to the Israelites, as the LORD had told him: 'What the people of the tribe of Joseph are saying is right.'
6This is the thing which Jehovah doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them be married to whom they think best; only into the family of the tribe of their father shall they be married.
6'This is what the LORD commands for the daughters of Zelophehad: They may marry anyone they like, as long as they marry someone within a clan of their father’s tribe.'
7So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall cleave every one to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
7'In this way, no land belonging to the Israelites will pass from one tribe to another. Every Israelite must keep the land that belonged to their ancestors' tribe.'
8And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers.
8'Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must marry someone from a clan within her father’s tribe. This way, every Israelite will keep the land inherited from their ancestors.'
9So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall cleave every one to his own inheritance.
9'No land inheritance can be passed from one tribe to another; every tribe of Israel must keep its own land.'
10Even as Jehovah commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad:
10So the daughters of Zelophehad did exactly as the LORD commanded Moses.
11for Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father’s brothers’ sons.
11Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah—the daughters of Zelophehad—married their cousins on their father's side.
12They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.
12They married within the clans of the descendants of Manasseh, the son of Joseph. Because of this, their land stayed within the tribe of their father’s family.
13These are the commandments and the ordinances which Jehovah commanded by Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
13These are the commands and rules that the LORD gave to the Israelites through Moses while they were camped on the plains of Moab by the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
