1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
1And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
1Then the Lord said to Moses,
2Revenge first the children of Israel on the Madianites, and so thou shalt be gathered to thy people.
2`Execute the vengeance of the sons of Israel against the Midianites--afterwards thou art gathered unto thy people.'
2Give the Midianites punishment for the wrong they did to the children of Israel: and after that you will go to rest with your people.
3And Moses forthwith said: Arm of you men to fight, who may take the revenge of the Lord on the Madianites.
3And Moses speaketh unto the people, saying, `Be ye armed some of you for the host, and they are against Midian, to put the vengeance of Jehovah on Midian;
3So Moses said to the people, Let men from among you be armed for war to put into effect against Midian the Lord's punishment on them.
4Let a thousand men be chosen out of every tribe of Israel to be sent to the war.
4a thousand for a tribe--a thousand for a tribe, to all the tribes of Israel--ye do send to the host.'
4From every tribe of Israel send a thousand to the war.
5And they gave a thousand of every tribe, that is to say, twelve thousand men well appointed for battle.
5And there are given out of the thousands of Israel a thousand for a tribe, twelve thousand armed ones of the host;
5So from the thousands of Israel a thousand were taken from every tribe, twelve thousand men armed for war.
6And Moses sent them with Phinees the son of Eleazar the priest, and he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.
6and Moses sendeth them, a thousand for a tribe, to the host, them and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, to the host; and the holy vessels, and the trumpets of the shouting, in his hand.
6And Moses sent them out to war, a thousand from every tribe, and with them Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest, taking in his hands the vessels of the holy place and the horns for sounding the note of war.
7And when they had fought against the Madianites and had overcome them, they slew all the men.
7And they war against Midian, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses, and slay every male;
7And they made war on Midian, as the Lord gave orders to Moses; and they put to death every male.
8And their kings Evi, and Recem, and Sur, and Hur, and Rebe, five princes of the nation: Balaam also the son of Beor they killed with the sword.
8and the kings of Midian they have slain, besides their pierced ones, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor, they have slain with the sword.
8They put the kings of Midian to death with the rest, Evi and Reken and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian: and Balaam, the son of Beor, they put to death with the sword.
9And they took their women, and their children captives, and all their cattle, and all their goods: and all their possessions they plundered:
9And the sons of Israel take captive the women of Midian, and their infants; and all their cattle, and all their substance, and all their wealth they have plundered;
9The women of Midian with their little ones the children of Israel took prisoner; and all their cattle and flocks and all their goods they took for themselves;
10And all their cities, and their villages, and castles, they burned.
10and all their cities, with their habitations, and all their towers, they have burnt with fire.
10And after burning all their towns and all their tent-circles,
11And they carried away the booty, and all that they had taken both of men and of beasts.
11And they take all the spoil, and all the prey, among man and among beast;
11They went away with the goods they had taken, man and beast.
12And they brought them to Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the children of Israel. But the rest of the things for use they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, beside the Jordan over against Jericho.
12and they bring in, unto Moses, and unto Eleazar the priest, and unto the company of the sons of Israel, the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto the camp, unto the plains of Moab, which <FI>are<Fi> by Jordan, <FI>near<Fi> Jericho.
12And the prisoners and the goods and everything they had taken, they took to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the people of Israel, to the tent-circle in the lowlands of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
13And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the princes of the synagogue went forth to meet them without the camp.
13And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the company, go out to meet them, unto the outside of the camp,
13Then Moses and Eleazar the priest and the chiefs of the people went out to them before they had come into the tent-circle.
14And Moses being angry with the chief officers of the army, the tribunes, and the centurions that were come from the battle,
14and Moses is wroth against the inspectors of the force, chiefs of the thousands, and chiefs of the hundreds, who are coming in from the host of the battle.
14And Moses was angry with the chiefs of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds who had come back from the war.
15Said: Why have you saved the women?
15And Moses saith unto them, `Have ye kept alive every female?
15And Moses said to them, Why have you kept all the women safe?
16Are not these they, that deceived the children of Israel by the counsel of Balaam, and made you transgress against the Lord by the sin of Phogor, for which also the people was punished?
16lo, they--they have been to the sons of Israel, through the word of Balaam, to cause a trespass against Jehovah in the matter of Peor, and the plague is in the company of Jehovah.
16It was these who, moved by Balaam, were the cause of Israel's sin against the Lord in the question of Peor, because of which disease came on the people of the Lord.
17Therefore kill all that are of the male sex, even of the children: and put to death the women, that have carnally known men.
17`And now, slay ye every male among the infants, yea, every woman known of man by the lying of a male ye have slain;
17So now put every male child to death, and every woman who has had sex relations with a man.
18But the girls, and all the women that are virgins save for yourselves:
18and all the infants among the women, who have not known the lying of a male, ye have kept alive for yourselves.
18But all the female children who have had no sex relations with men, you may keep for yourselves.
19And stay without the camp seven days. He that hath killed a man, or touched one that is killed, shall be purified the third day and the seventh day.
19`And ye, encamp ye at the outside of the camp seven days--any who hath slain a person, and any who hath come against a pierced one, ye cleanse yourselves on the third day, and on the seventh day--ye and your captives;
19You yourselves will have to keep outside the tent-circle for seven days, anyone of you who has put any person to death or come near a dead body; and on the third day and on the seventh day make yourselves and your prisoners clean.
20And of all the spoil, every garment, or vessel, or any thing made for use, of the skins, or hair of goats, or of wood, shall be purified.
20and every garment, and every skin vessel, and every work of goats' <FI>hair<Fi> , and every wooden vessel, ye yourselves cleanse.'
20And every bit of clothing, and anything made of leather or goats' hair or wood, you are to make clean.
21Eleazar also the priest spoke to the men of the army, that had fought, in this manner: This is the ordinance of the law, which the Lord hath commanded Moses:
21And Eleazar the priest saith unto the men of the host who go in to battle, `This <FI>is<Fi> the statute of the law which Jehovah hath commanded Moses:
21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had been to the fight, This is the rule of the law which the Lord has given to Moses:
22Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,
22only, the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
22But gold and silver and brass and iron and tin and lead,
23And all that may pass through the fire, shall be purified by fire, but whatsoever cannot abide the fire, shall be sanctified with the water of expiation:
23every thing which may go into fire, ye cause to pass over through fire, and it hath been clean; only, with the water of separation it is cleansed, and all that may not go into fire, ye cause to pass over through water;
23And anything which may be heated, is to go through the fire and be made clean; but in addition it is to be put in the water of cleaning: and anything which may not go through the fire is to be put in the water.
24And you shall wash your garments the seventh day, and being purified, you shall afterwards enter into the camp.
24and ye have washed your garments on the seventh day, and have been clean, and afterwards ye come in unto the camp.'
24And on the seventh day, after washing your clothing, you will be clean, and then you may come into the tent-circle.
25And the Lord said to Moses:
25And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
25And the Lord said to Moses,
26Take the sum of the things that were taken both of man and beast, thou and Eleazar the priest and the princes of the multitude:
26`Take up the sum of the prey of the captives, among man and among beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the heads of the fathers of the company;
26Get an account of everything which was taken in the war, of man and of beast, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of families of the people:
27And thou shalt divide the spoil equally, between them that fought and went out to the war, and between the rest of the multitude.
27and thou hast halved the prey between those handling the battle who go out to the host and all the company;
27And let division be made of it into two parts, one for the men of war who went out to the fight, and one for all the people:
28And thou shalt separate a portion to the Lord from them that fought and were in the battle, one soul of five hundred as well of persons as of oxen and asses and sheep.
28and thou hast raised a tribute to Jehovah from the men of war, who go out to the host, one body out of five hundred, of man, and of the herd, and of the asses, and of the flock;
28And from the men of war who went out let there be offered to the Lord one out of every five hundred, from the persons, and from the oxen and asses and sheep:
29And thou shalt give it to Eleazar the priest, because they are the firstfruits of the Lord.
29from their half ye do take, and thou hast given to Eleazar the priest--the heave-offering of Jehovah.
29Take this from their part and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to be lifted up to the Lord.
30Out of the moiety also of the children of Israel thou shalt take the fiftieth head of persons, and of oxen, and asses, and sheep, and of all beasts, and thou shalt give them to the Levites that watch in the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.
30`And from the sons of Israel's half thou dost take one possession out of fifty, of man, of the herd, of the asses, and of the flock, of all the cattle, and thou hast given them to the Levites keeping the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah.'
30And from the part given to the children of Israel, take one out of every fifty, from the persons, and from the oxen and asses and sheep, and give it to the Levites who have the care of the House of the Lord.
31And Moses and Eleazar did as the Lord had commanded.
31And Moses doth--Eleazar the priest also--as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
31So Eleazar and Moses did as the Lord had given orders to Moses.
32And the spoil which the army had taken, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
32And the prey, the residue of the spoil which the people of the host have spoiled, is of the flock six hundred thousand, and seventy thousand, and five thousand;
32Now the beasts taken, in addition to what the fighting-men took for themselves, were six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep,
33Seventy-two thousand oxen,
33and of the herd two and seventy thousand;
33And seventy-two thousand oxen,
35And thirty-two thousand persons of the female sex, that had not known men.
35and of human beings--of the women who have not known the lying of a male--all the persons <FI>are<Fi> two and thirty thousand.
35And thirty-two thousand persons, that is, women who had never had sex relations with a man.
36And one half was given to them that had been in the battle, to wit, three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep:
36And the half--the portion of those who go out into the host--the number of the flock is three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, and seven thousand and five hundred.
36And the half given as their part to the men who went to the war, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand, five hundred sheep,
37Out of which, for the portion of the Lord, were reckoned six hundred seventy five sheep.
37And the tribute to Jehovah of the sheep is six hundred five and seventy;
37Of which the Lord's part was six hundred and seventy-five.
38And out of the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen:
38and the herd <FI>is<Fi> six and thirty thousand, and their tribute to Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> two and seventy;
38The number of oxen was thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord's part was seventy-two;
39Out of the thirty thousand five hundred asses, sixty-one asses:
39and the asses <FI>are<Fi> thirty thousand and five hundred, and their tribute to Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> one and sixty;
39The number of asses was thirty thousand, five hundred, of which the Lord's part was sixty-one.
40Out of the sixteen thousand persons, there fell to the portion of the Lord, thirty-two souls.
40and the human beings <FI>are<Fi> sixteen thousand, and their tribute to Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> two and thirty persons.
40And the number of persons was sixteen thousand, of which the Lord's part was thirty-two persons.
41And Moses delivered the number of the firstfruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, as had been commanded him,
41And Moses giveth the tribute--Jehovah's heave-offering--to Eleazar the priest, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
41And Moses gave the Lord's part, lifted up as an offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord had given orders to Moses.
42Out of the half of the children of Israel, which he had separated for them that had been in the battle.
42And of the sons of Israel's half, which Moses halved from the men who war--
42And from the half given to the children of Israel, which Moses had kept separate from that given to the fighting-men,
43But out of the half that fell to the rest of the multitude, that is to say, out of the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
43and the company's half is, of the flock three hundred thousand, and thirty thousand, seven thousand and five hundred;
43(Now the people's half was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand, five hundred sheep,
44And out of the thirty-six thousand oxen,
44and of the herd six and thirty thousand;
44And thirty-six thousand oxen,
45And out of the thirty thousand five hundred asses,
45and of asses thirty thousand and five hundred;
45And thirty thousand, five hundred asses,
46And out of the sixteen thousand persons,
46and of human beings sixteen thousand--
46And sixteen thousand persons;)
47Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites that watched in the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded.
47Moses taketh from the sons of Israel's half the one possession from the fifty, of man and of beast, and giveth them to the Levites keeping the charge of the tabernacle of Jehovah, as Jehovah hath commanded Moses.
47Even from the children of Israel's half, Moses took one out of every fifty, men and beasts, and gave them to the Levites who had the care of the House of the Lord; as the Lord gave orders to Moses.
48And when the commanders of the army, and the tribunes and centurions were come to Moses, they said:
48And the inspectors whom the thousands of the host hath, (heads of the thousands and heads of the hundreds), draw near unto Moses,
48Then the men in authority over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came to Moses,
49We thy servants have reckoned up the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and not so much as one was wanting.
49and they say unto Moses, `Thy servants have taken up the sum of the men of war who <FI>are<Fi> with us, and not a man of us hath been missed;
49And said to him, Your servants have taken note of the number of all the fighting-men under our orders, and every one is present;
50Therefore we offer as gifts to the Lord what gold every one of us could find in the booty, in garters and tablets, rings and bracelets, and chains, that thou mayst pray to the Lord for us.
50and we bring near Jehovah's offering, each that which he hath found, vessels of gold--chain, and bracelet, seal-ring, <FI>ear<Fi> -ring, and bead--to make atonement for ourselves before Jehovah.'
50And we have here an offering for the Lord from what every man took in the war, ornaments of gold, leg-chains and arm-rings, finger-rings, ear-rings, and neck-ornaments, to make our souls free from sin before the Lord.
51And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in divers kinds,
51And Moses receiveth--Eleazar the priest also--the gold from them, every made vessel,
51So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, even all the worked ornaments.
52In weight sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty sicles, from the tribunes and from the centurions.
52and all the gold of the heave-offering which they have lifted up to Jehovah is sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from heads of the thousands, and from heads of the hundreds;
52And the gold which the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds gave, as an offering to be lifted up before the Lord, came to sixteen thousand, seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53For that which every one had taken in the booty was his own.
53(the men of the host have spoiled each for himself);
53(For every man of the army had taken goods for himself in the war.)
54And that which was received they brought into the tabernacle of the testimony, for a memorial of the children of Israel before the Lord.
54and Moses taketh--Eleazar the priest also--the gold from the heads of the thousands and of the hundreds, and they bring it in unto the tent of meeting--a memorial for the sons of Israel before Jehovah.
54Then Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold given by the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and took it into the Tent of meeting, to be a sign in memory of the children of Israel before the Lord.
