1And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,

1The LORD said to Moses,

2Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods: write thou every man’s name upon his rod.

2“Speak to the Israelites and get twelve wooden staffs from them, one for each leader of their ancestral tribes. Write each man’s name on his staff.

3And thou shalt write Aaron’s name upon the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers’ houses.

3Write Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi, because there must be one staff for the head of each tribal family.

4And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.

4Place them in the tent of meeting in front of the ark of the covenant, where I meet with you.

5And it shall come to pass, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.

5The staff of the man I choose will sprout. This is how I will stop the Israelites from constantly complaining against you.”

6And Moses spake unto the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.

6So Moses spoke to the Israelites. Each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each tribal family, totaling twelve staffs. Aaron’s staff was among them.

7And Moses laid up the rods before Jehovah in the tent of the testimony.

7Moses placed the staffs before the LORD in the tent of the covenant.

8And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and bare ripe almonds.

8The next day, Moses went into the tent of the covenant and saw that Aaron’s staff, representing the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted, but had also budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds.

9And Moses brought out all the rods from before Jehovah unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.

9Then Moses brought all the staffs out from the LORD’s presence to all the Israelites. They all looked at them, and each leader took back his own staff.

10And Jehovah said unto Moses, Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that thou mayest make an end of their murmurings against me, that they die not.

10The LORD said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s staff back in front of the ark of the covenant to be kept as a warning to these rebels. This should put an end to their complaining against me, so that they do not die.”

11Thus did Moses: as Jehovah commanded him, so did he.

11Moses did exactly what the LORD commanded him to do.

12And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone.

12But the Israelites said to Moses, “We are going to die! We are lost—we are all lost!

13Every one that cometh near, that cometh near unto the tabernacle of Jehovah, dieth: shall we perish all of us?

13Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the LORD dies. Are we all going to perish?”
