16Of the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.

17And Moses sendeth them to spy the land of Canaan, and saith unto them, `Go ye up this <FI>way<Fi> into the south, and ye have gone up the mountain,

17These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Josue.

18and have seen the land what it <FI>is<Fi> , and the people which is dwelling on it, whether it <FI>is<Fi> strong or feeble; whether it <FI>is<Fi> few or many;

18And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains,

19and what the land <FI>is<Fi> in which it is dwelling, whether it <FI>is<Fi> good or bad; and what <FI>are<Fi> the cities in which it is dwelling, whether in camps or in fortresses;

19View the land, of what sort it is, and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many:

20And what the land <FI>is<Fi> , whether it <FI>is<Fi> fat or lean; whether there is wood in it or not; and ye have strengthened yourselves, and have taken of the fruit of the land;' and the days <FI>are<Fi> days of the first-fruits of grapes.

20The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls:

21And they go up and spy the land, from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob at the going in to Hamath;

21The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the firstripe grapes are fit to be eaten.

22and they go up by the south, and come in unto Hebron, and there <FI>are<Fi> Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, children of Anak (and Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt),

22And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath.

23and they come in unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down thence a branch and one cluster of grapes, and they bear it on a staff by two, also <FI>some<Fi> of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

23And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt.

24That place hath <FI>one<Fi> called Brook of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut from thence.

24And forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place:

25And they turn back from spying the land at the end of forty days.

25Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes.

26And they go and come in unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto all the company of the sons of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and they bring them and all the company back word, and shew them the fruit of the land.

26And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country,

27And they recount to him, and say, `We came in unto the land whither thou hast sent us, and also it <FI>is<Fi> flowing with milk and honey--and this <FI>is<Fi> its fruit;

27And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they shewed them the fruits of the land:

28only, surely the people which is dwelling in the land <FI>is<Fi> strong; and the cities are fenced, very great; and also children of Anak we have seen there.

28And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits:

29Amalek is dwelling in the land of the south, and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite is dwelling in the hill country, and the Canaanite is dwelling by the sea, and by the side of the Jordan.'

29But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac.

30And Caleb stilleth the people concerning Moses, and saith, `Let us certainly go up--and we have possessed it; for we are thoroughly able for it.'

30Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan.

31And the men who have gone up with him said, `We are not able to go up against the people, for it <FI>is<Fi> stronger than we;'

31In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it.

32and they bring out an evil account of the land which they have spied unto the sons of Israel, saying, `The land into which we passed over to spy it, is a land eating up its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in its midst <FI> are<Fi> men of stature;

32But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we.

33and there we saw the Nephilim, sons of Anak, of the Nephilim; and we are in our own eyes as grasshoppers; and so we were in their eyes.'

33And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld are of a tall stature.

34(not in this translation)

34There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts.
