1And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and trying him asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and, trying to trap him, asked him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven.
2But he answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the heaven is red.
2He answered them, 'When evening comes, you say, "The weather will be good because the sky is red."
3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the heaven is red and lowering. Ye know how to discern the face of the heaven; but ye cannot discern the signs of the times.
3'And in the morning, "It will be stormy today because the sky is red and dark." You know how to read the appearance of the sky, yet you cannot understand the signs of the times.'
4An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of Jonah. And he left them, and departed.
4'An evil and unfaithful generation looks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.' Then he left them and went away.
5And the disciples came to the other side and forgot to take bread.
5When the disciples went to the other side of the lake, they forgot to bring any bread.
6And Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
6Jesus said to them, 'Watch out and be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'
7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, We took no bread.
7They started discussing this among themselves, saying, 'He said this because we didn't bring any bread.'
8And Jesus perceiving it said, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have no bread?
8Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, 'You have so little faith! Why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?'
9Do ye not yet perceive, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
9'Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets of leftovers you gathered?'
10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
10'Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many large baskets you gathered?'
11How is it that ye do not perceive that I spake not to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
11'How can you not see that I wasn't talking to you about bread? Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.'
12Then understood they that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
12Then they finally understood that he wasn't telling them to watch out for the yeast used in bread, but for the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13Now when Jesus came into the parts of Cæsarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that the Son of man is?
13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 'Who do people say the Son of Man is?'
14And they said, Some say John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.
14They replied, 'Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.'
15He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am?
15'But what about you?' he asked. 'Who do you say I am?'
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
16Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.'
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven.
17Jesus replied, 'You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no human revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.'
18And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
18'And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the power of death will not overcome it.'
19I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19'I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.'
20Then charged he the disciples that they should tell no man that he was the Christ.
20Then he strictly warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
21From that time began Jesus to show unto his disciples, that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
21From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, leading priests, and teachers of the law. He told them he would be killed and raised to life on the third day.
22And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall never be unto thee.
22Peter took him aside and began to correct him, saying, 'God forbid, Lord! This must never happen to you!'
23But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art a stumbling-block unto me: for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men.
23Jesus turned and said to Peter, 'Get behind me, Satan! You are a trap to me because you aren't thinking about God’s concerns, but human concerns.'
24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
24Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'If anyone wants to be my follower, he must give up his own way, take up his cross, and follow me.'
25For whosoever would save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it.
25'For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.'
26For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?
26'What good does it do a person if he gains the whole world but loses his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?'
