1The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
1This is the record of the family line of Jesus Christ, who was a descendant of David and a descendant of Abraham.
2Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judah and his brethren;
2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3and Judah begat Perez and Zerah of Tamar; and Perez begat Hezron; and Hezron begat Ram;

6Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (his mother had been the wife of Uriah).
7and Solomon begat Rehoboam; and Rehoboam begat Abijah; and Abijah begat Asa;
7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam was the father of Abijah, and Abijah was the father of Asa.
8and Asa begat Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Uzziah;
8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram, and Joram was the father of Uzziah.
9and Uzziah begat Jotham; and Jotham begat Ahaz; and Ahaz begat Hezekiah;
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham was the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10and Hezekiah begat Manasseh; and Manasseh begat Amon; and Amon begat Josiah;
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh was the father of Amon, and Amon was the father of Josiah.
11and Josiah begat Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the carrying away to Babylon.
11Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time the people were taken away to Babylon.
12And after the carrying away to Babylon, Jechoniah begat Shealtiel; and Shealtiel begat Zerubbabel;
12After the move to Babylon, Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13and Zerubbabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud was the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14and Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15and Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;
15Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar was the father of Matthan, and Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16and Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
16Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Christ.
17So all the generations from Abraham unto David are fourteen generations; and from David unto the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon unto the Christ fourteen generations.
17So there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David until the move to Babylon, and fourteen from the move to Babylon to the Christ.
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
18This is how Jesus Christ was born: His mother Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before they had sex, she found out she was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit.
19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
19Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to shame her in public. So he decided to break the engagement quietly.
20But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
20While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, 'Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit.
21And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for it is he that shall save his people from their sins.
21She will give birth to a son, and you must name him JESUS, because he will save his people from their sins.'
22Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
22All of this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, And they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us.
23'Listen! The virgin will be pregnant and will give birth to a son. They will name him Immanuel,' which means 'God is with us.'
