Luke 5

1And it came to pass, as the crowd pressed on him to hear the word ofGod, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret:

4But when he ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Draw out into the deep [water] and let down your nets for a haul.

5And Simon answering said to him, Master, having laboured through the whole night we have taken nothing, but at thy word I will let down the net.

10and in like manner also on James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Fear not; henceforth thou shalt be catching men.

10And so were also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were Simon's partners. And Jesus saith to Simon: Fear not: from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

11And having run the ships on shore, leaving all they followed him.

12And it came to pass as he was in one of the cities, that behold, there was a man full of leprosy, and seeing Jesus, falling upon his face, he besought him saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou art able to cleanse me.

12And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy who, seeing Jesus and falling on his face, besought him saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

12And it came to pass, in his being in one of the cities, that lo, a man full of leprosy, and having seen Jesus, having fallen on <FI>his<Fi> face, he besought him, saying, `Sir, if thou mayest will, thou art able to cleanse me;'

13And stretching forth his hand he touched him, saying, I will; be thou cleansed: and immediately the leprosy departed from him.

14And he enjoined him to tell no one; but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing as Moses ordained, for a testimony to them.

15But the report concerning him was spread abroad still more, and great crowds came together to hear, and to be healed from their infirmities.

16And he withdrew himself, and was about in the desert [places] and praying.

17And it came to pass on one of the days, that he was teaching, and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who were come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and [out of] Jerusalem; and [the] Lord's power was [there] to heal them.

17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he sat teaching, that there were also Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, that were come out of every town of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them.

17And it came to pass, on one of the days, that he was teaching, and there were sitting by Pharisees and teachers of the Law, who were come out of every village of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was--to heal them.

18And lo, men bringing upon a couch a man who was paralysed; and they sought to bring him in, and put [him] before him.

18And behold, men brought in a bed a man who had the palsy: and they sought means to bring him in and to lay him before him.

18And lo, men bearing upon a couch a man, who hath been struck with palsy, and they were seeking to bring him in, and to place before him,

19And not finding what way to bring him in, on account of the crowd, going up on the housetop they let him down through the tiles, with his little couch, into the midst before Jesus.

19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in, because of the multitude, they went up upon the roof and let him down through the tiles with his bed into the midst before Jesus.

19and not having found by what way they may bring him in because of the multitude, having gone up on the house-top, through the tiles they let him down, with the little couch, into the midst before Jesus,

20And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

20Whose faith when he saw, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.

21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason [in their minds], saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins butGod alone?

21And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this who speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?

21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, `Who is this that doth speak evil words? who is able to forgive sins, except God only?'

22But Jesus, knowing their reasonings, answering said to them, Why reason ye in your hearts?

22And when Jesus knew their thoughts, answering he said to them: What is it you think in your hearts?

23which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?

23Which is easier to say: Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say: Arise and walk?

23which is easier--to say, Thy sins have been forgiven thee? or to say, Arise, and walk?

24But that ye may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralysed man, I say to thee, Arise, and take up thy little couch and go to thine house.

24But that you may know that the Son of man hath the power on earth to forgive sins (he saith to the sick of the palsy), I say to thee to: Arise, take up thy bed and go into thy house.

24`And that ye may know that the Son of Man hath authority upon the earth to forgive sins--(he said to the one struck with palsy) --I say to thee, Arise, and having taken up thy little couch, be going on to thy house.'

25And immediately standing up before them, having taken up that whereon he was laid, he departed to his house, glorifyingGod.

25And immediately rising up before them, he took up the bed on which he lay: and he went away to his own house, glorifying God.

26And astonishment seized all, and they glorifiedGod, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day.

27And after these things he went forth and saw a tax-gatherer, Levi by name, sitting at the receipt of taxes, and said to him, Follow me.

27And after these things, he went forth and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said to him: Follow me.

27And after these things he went forth, and beheld a tax-gatherer, by name Levi, sitting at the tax-office, and said to him, `Be following me;'

28And having left all, rising up, he followed him.

29And Levi made a great entertainment for him in his house, and there was a great crowd of tax-gatherers and others who were at table with them.

29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: And there was a great company of publicans and of others that were at table with them.

29And Levi made a great entertainment to him in his house, and there was a great multitude of tax-gatherers and others who were with them reclining (at meat),

30And their scribes and the Pharisees murmured at his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with tax-gatherers and sinners?

30But the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

30and the scribes and the Pharisees among them were murmuring at his disciples, saying, `Wherefore with tax-gatherers and sinners do ye eat and drink?'

31And Jesus answering said to them, They that are in sound health have not need of a physician, but those that are ill.

31And Jesus answering, said to them: They that are whole need not the physician: but they that are sick.

31And Jesus answering said unto them, `They who are well have no need of a physician, but they that are ill:

32I am not come to call righteous [persons], but sinful [ones] to repentance.

32I came not to call the just, but sinners to penance.

32I came not to call righteous men, but sinners, to reformation.'

33And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast often and make supplications, in like manner those also of the Pharisees, but thine eat and drink?

33And they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees in like manner; but thine eat and drink?

33And they said unto him, `Wherefore do the disciples of John fast often, and make supplications--in like manner also those of the Pharisees--but thine do eat and drink?'

34And he said to them, Can ye make the sons of the bridechamber fast when the bridegroom is with them?

34To whom he said: Can you make the children of the bridegroom fast whilst the bridegroom is with them?

34And he said unto them, `Are ye able to make the sons of the bride-chamber--in the bridegroom being with them--to fast?

35But days will come when also the bridegroom will have been taken away from them; then shall they fast in those days.

35But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them: then shall they fast in those days.

35but days will come, and, when the bridegroom may be taken away from them, then they shall fast in those days.'

36And he spoke also a parable to them: No one puts a piece of a new garment upon an old garment, otherwise he will both rend the new, and the piece which is from the new will not suit with the old.

36And he spoke also a similitude to them: That no man putteth a piece from a new garment upon an old garment: otherwise he both rendeth the new, and the piece taken from the new agreeth not with the old.

36And he spake also a simile unto them--`No one a patch of new clothing doth put on old clothing, and if otherwise, the new also doth make a rent, and with the old the patch doth not agree, that <FI>is<Fi> from the new.

37And no one puts new wine into old skins, otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be poured out, and the skins will be destroyed;

37And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles; and it will be spilled and the bottles will be lost.

37`And no one doth put new wine into old skins, and if otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and itself will be poured out, and the skins will be destroyed;

38but new wine is to be put into new skins, and both are preserved.

38But new wine must be put into new bottles: and both are preserved.

39And no one having drunk old wine [straightway] wishes for new, for he says, The old is better.

39And no man drinking old hath presently a mind to new: for he saith: The old is better.
