Luke 20

1And it came to pass on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and announcing the glad tidings, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up,

1And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon <FI>him<Fi> ,

2and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority?

2That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority.

2and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?'

3And he answering said to them, I also will ask you [one] thing, and tell me:

3And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer:

3And he answering said unto them, `I will question you--I also--one thing, and tell me:

4The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men?

4The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?

4the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?'

5And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?

5And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him?

5And they reasoned with themselves, saying--`If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?

6but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

6But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet.

6and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.'

7And they answered, they did not know whence.

7And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from.

7And they answered, that they knew not whence <FI>it was<Fi> ,

8And Jesus said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

8And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things.

8and Jesus said to them, `Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'

9And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time.

9And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time.

9And he began to speak unto the people this simile: `A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,

10And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent [him] away empty.

10And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing.

10and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send <FI>him<Fi> away empty.

11And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent [him] away empty.

11And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing.

11`And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;

12And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast [him] out.

12And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out.

12and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.

13And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect [him].

13And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him.

13`And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son--the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;

14But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; [come,] let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.

14But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours.

14and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;

15And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed [him]. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?

15And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen?

15and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed <FI>him<Fi> ; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!

16He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so.

16He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, `Let it not be!'

17But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?

17But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building?

17and he, having looked upon them, said, `What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected--this became head of a corner?

18Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.

18Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust.

18every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.'

19And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.

19And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them.

20And having watched [him], they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in [his] language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.

20And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler.

20And, having watched <FI>him<Fi> , they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,

21And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no [man's] person, but teachest with truth the way ofGod:

21And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God:

21and they questioned him, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;

22Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

22Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not?

22Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

23But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?

23But he saw through their trick and said to them,

23And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, `Why me do ye tempt?

24Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.

24Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's.

24shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, `Of Caesar:'

25And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what isGod's toGod.

25And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.

25and he said to them, `Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

26And they were not able to take hold of him in [his] expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent.

26And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing.

27And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up [to him],

27And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him,

27And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,

28demanded of him saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother, who has a wife, die, and he die childless, his brother shall take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.

28Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother.

28saying, `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless--that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother.

29There were then seven brethren: and the first, having taken a wife, died childless;

29Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children;

29`There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,

30and the second [took the woman, and he died childless];

30And the second;

30and the second took the wife, and he died childless,

31and the third took her: and in like manner also the seven left no children and died;

31And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end.

31and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven--they left not children, and they died;

32and last of all the woman also died.

32And last of all, the woman came to her end.

32and last of all died also the woman:

33In the resurrection therefore of which of them does she become wife, for the seven had her as wife?

33When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her.

33in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? --for the seven had her as wife.'

34And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage,

34And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives;

34And Jesus answering said to them, `The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage,

35but they who are counted worthy to have part in that world, and the resurrection from among [the] dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;

35But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married;

35but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage;

36for neither can they die any more, for they are equal to angels, and are sons ofGod, being sons of the resurrection.

36And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead.

36for neither are they able to die any more--for they are like messengers--and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again.

37But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in [the section of] the bush, when he called [the] Lord theGod of Abraham and theGod of Isaac and theGod of Jacob;

37But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

37`And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;

38but he is notGod of [the] dead but of [the] living; for all live for him.

38Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him.

38and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.'

39And some of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well spoken.

39And some of the scribes, in answer to this, said, Master, you have said well.

39And certain of the scribes answering said, `Teacher, thou didst say well;'

40For they did not dare any more to ask him anything.

40And they had fear of putting any more questions to him.

40and no more durst they question him anything.

41And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is David's son,

41And he said to them, Why do they say that the Christ is the son of David?

41And he said unto them, `How do they say the Christ to be son of David,

42and David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand

42For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand,

42and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43until I put thine enemies [as] footstool of thy feet?

43Till I put under your feet all those who are against you.

43till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool;

44David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?

44David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son?

44David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?'

45And, as all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,

45And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples,

45And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples,

46Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and who love salutations in the market-places, and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;

46Keep away from the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes, and to have words of respect said to them in the market-places, and to take the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts;

46`Take heed of the scribes, who are wishing to walk in long robes, and are loving salutations in the markets, and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches in the suppers,

47who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.

47Who take the property of widows and before the eyes of men make long prayers; they will get a greater punishment.
