1And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before Jehovah, which he had not commanded them.

1Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, each took his incense burner, put fire and incense in it, and presented unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them to do.

2And there came forth fire from before Jehovah, and devoured them, and they died before Jehovah.

2Then fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died there before the LORD.

3Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that Jehovah spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

3Moses said to Aaron, 'This is what the LORD meant when he said: I will show my holiness through those who come near me, and I will be honored in front of all the people.' And Aaron remained silent.

4And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

4Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and told them, 'Come here; carry your cousins’ bodies away from the front of the sanctuary and take them outside the camp.'

5So they drew near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.

5So they came forward and carried them out of the camp by their tunics, just as Moses had ordered.

6And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes; that ye die not, and that he be not wroth with all the congregation: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which Jehovah hath kindled.

6Then Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Do not let your hair hang loose or tear your clothes in grief, or you will die and the LORD will be thin with the whole community. But your relatives, the entire house of Israel, may mourn because of the fire the LORD sent.'

7And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of Jehovah is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

7'Do not leave the entrance of the Tabernacle, or you will die, because the LORD’s anointing oil is on you.' So they did exactly what Moses said.

8And Jehovah spake unto Aaron, saying,

8Then the LORD spoke directly to Aaron, saying:

9Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

9'You and your sons must not drink wine or any other fermented drink when you go into the Tabernacle, so that you do not die. This is a permanent law for all your generations to come.'

10and that ye may make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean;

10'You must distinguish between what is holy and what is ordinary, and between what is ceremonially unclean and what is clean.'

11and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which Jehovah hath spoken unto them by Moses.

11'You must also teach the Israelites all the laws that the LORD has given them through Moses.'

12And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meal-offering that remaineth of the offerings of Jehovah made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy;

12Moses said to Aaron and his surviving sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, 'Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings presented to the LORD. Eat it without yeast next to the altar, because it is extremely holy.'

13and ye shall eat it in a holy place, because it is thy portion, and thy sons’ portion, of the offerings of Jehovah made by fire: for so I am commanded.

13'Eat it in a holy place, because it is the share assigned to you and your sons from the food offerings presented to the LORD; for this is what I was commanded.'

14And the wave-breast and the heave-thigh shall ye eat in a clean place, thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they are given as thy portion, and thy sons’ portion, out of the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the children of Israel.

14'But you, your sons, and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented as a gift in any ceremonially clean place. These parts have been given to you and your children as your share of the peace offerings from the Israelites.'

15The heave-thigh and the wave-breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave-offering before Jehovah: and it shall be thine, and thy sons’ with thee, as a portion for ever; as Jehovah hath commanded.

15'The people must bring the thigh of the contribution and the breast of the wave offering, along with the fat from the food offerings, to be lifted up as a special gift before the LORD. These parts will belong to you and your descendants forever, just as the LORD commanded.'

16And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin-offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left, saying,

16When Moses looked for the goat for the sin offering, he found out it had already been burned up. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked:

17Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the place of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and he hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Jehovah?

17'Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is extremely holy! The LORD gave it to you to remove the guilt of the community and to make atonement for them before the LORD.'

18Behold, the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within: ye should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.

18'Since its blood was not brought inside the sanctuary, you should have eaten the meat in the sanctuary area, just as I commanded.'

19And Aaron spake unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before Jehovah; and there have befallen me such things as these: and if I had eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of Jehovah?

19Aaron replied to Moses, 'Look, today they presented their sin offering and burnt offering before the LORD, and yet these terrible things have happened to me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would the LORD have been pleased with that?'

20And when Moses heard that, it was well-pleasing in his sight.

20When Moses heard this explanation, he was satisfied.
