1Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none went out, and none came in.
1Now the gates of Jericho were tightly shut and bolted because the people were afraid of the Israelites; no one went out and no one came in.
2And Jehovah said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thy hand Jericho, and the king thereof, and the mighty men of valor.
2The LORD said to Joshua, "Look, I have handed Jericho over to you, along with its king and its brave fighting men.
3And ye shall compass the city, all the men of war, going about the city once. Thus shalt thou do six days.
3You and all your soldiers must march around the city once a day for six days.
4And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark: and the seventh day ye shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.
4Have seven priests carry seven trumpets made of rams' horns in front of the Ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times while the priests blow the trumpets.
5And it shall be, that, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.
5When you hear a long blast on the trumpets, have all the people give a loud shout. Then the city wall will collapse, and the army can charge straight into the city."
6And Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Jehovah.
6So Joshua son of Nun called the priests together and told them, "Take up the Ark of the Covenant, and have seven priests carry seven trumpets of rams' horns ahead of the LORD’s Ark."
7And they said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let the armed men pass on before the ark of Jehovah.
7Then he told the people, "Go forward and march around the city, with the armed guard leading the way ahead of the LORD’s Ark."
8And it was so, that, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Jehovah passed on, and blew the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah followed them.
8After Joshua finished speaking to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the LORD started moving forward, blowing their trumpets, and the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant followed them.
9And the armed men went before the priests that blew the trumpets, and the rearward went after the ark, the priests blowing the trumpets as they went.
9The armed men marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the Ark, while the trumpets kept sounding.
10And Joshua commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall ye shout.
10But Joshua had commanded the people, "Do not shout or let your voices be heard. Do not say a single word until the day I tell you to shout. Then you must shout!"
11So he caused the ark of Jehovah to compass the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.
11So he had the Ark of the LORD carried around the city once. Then the people returned to the camp and spent the night there.
12And Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Jehovah.
12Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests took up the Ark of the LORD.
13And the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark of Jehovah went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came after the ark of Jehovah, the priests blowing the trumpets as they went.
13The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets of rams' horns ahead of the LORD’s Ark kept marching and blowing their trumpets. The armed men marched ahead of them, and the rear guard followed the Ark, while the trumpets sounded continually.
14And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.
14On the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days total.
15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.
15On the seventh day, they got up at dawn and marched around the city seven times in the same way; this was the only day they went around it seven times.
16And it came to pass at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout; for Jehovah hath given you the city.
16On the seventh time around, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua told the people, "Shout! For the LORD has given you the city!
17And the city shall be devoted, even it and all that is therein, to Jehovah: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
17The city and everything in it must be completely destroyed as an offering to the LORD. Only Rahab the prostitute and everyone in her house will live, because she hid the messengers we sent.
18But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when ye have devoted it, ye take of the devoted thing; so would ye make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.
18But stay away from the things set apart for destruction, so that you don't take them for yourselves. If you take them, you will bring trouble and destruction on the camp of Israel.
19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy unto Jehovah: they shall come into the treasury of Jehovah.
19All the silver, gold, and articles of bronze and iron are holy to the LORD and must go into the LORD’s treasury."
20So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
20When the priests blew the trumpets, the people shouted. As soon as the people heard the trumpet blast and gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed. The army charged straight in and captured the city.
21And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.
21They completely destroyed everything in the city with the sword—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, and donkeys.
22And Joshua said unto the two men that had spied out the land, Go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her.
22Joshua said to the two men who had scouted the land, "Go to the prostitute’s house and bring her out, along with everyone who belongs to her, just as you promised her."
23And the young men the spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; all her kindred also they brought out; and they set them without the camp of Israel.
23So the young spies went in and brought out Rahab, her father, her mother, her brothers, and everyone else with her. They moved her entire family to a safe place outside the camp of Israel.
24And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein; only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of Jehovah.
24Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, except for the silver, gold, and the articles of bronze and iron, which they put into the treasury of the LORD’s house.
25But Rahab the harlot, and her father’s household, and all that she had, did Joshua save alive; and she dwelt in the midst of Israel unto this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
25But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, her family, and everyone who was with her because she hid the men Joshua sent to scout out Jericho. She lives among the Israelites to this day.
26And Joshua charged them with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be the man before Jehovah, that riseth up and buildeth this city Jericho: with the loss of his first-born shall he lay the foundation thereof, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
26At that time Joshua made this solemn command: "May the LORD’s curse fall on anyone who tries to rebuild this city of Jericho. At the cost of his oldest son will he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son will he set up its gates."
