Joshua 13

1Now Joshua was old and well stricken in years; and Jehovah said unto him, Thou art old and well stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

1When Joshua was very old, the LORD said to him, 'You are now very old, but there is still a lot of land that has not been taken yet.

2This is the land that yet remaineth: all the regions of the Philistines, and all the Geshurites;

2This is the land that is left: all the regions belonging to the Philistines and the Geshurites;

3from the Shihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the border of Ekron northward, which is reckoned to the Canaanites; the five lords of the Philistines; the Gazites, and the Ashdodites, the Ashkelonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avvim,

3the area from the Shihor River at the edge of Egypt northward to the border of Ekron, which is considered Canaanite territory. This includes the five Philistine rulers in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as the Avvites.

4on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongeth to the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;

4To the south, there is all the land of the Canaanites and Mearah (which belongs to the Sidonians) as far as Aphek to the border of the Amorites.

5and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entrance of Hamath;

5There is also the land of the Gebalites and all of Lebanon to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.

6all the inhabitants of the hill-country from Lebanon unto Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians; them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only allot thou it unto Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

6I myself will drive out all the Sidonians who live in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim. Just make sure you distribute this land to Israel as their property, just as I commanded you.

7Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

7Now, divide this land as an inheritance among the nine tribes and the other half of the tribe of Manasseh.'

8With him the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of Jehovah gave them:

8The other half of the tribe of Manasseh, along with the tribes of Reuben and Gad, had already received the land Moses gave them on the east side of the Jordan River. Moses, the servant of the LORD, had assigned it to them.

9from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

9Their territory started at Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, including the town in the middle of the valley and the whole plateau from Medeba to Dibon.

10and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

10It included all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, reaching to the border of the Ammonites.

11and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salecah;

11It also included Gilead, the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah.

12all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (the same was left of the remnant of the Rephaim); for these did Moses smite, and drove them out.

12This was the entire kingdom of Og in Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei. He was the last of the Rephaim giants. Moses had defeated them and taken their land.

13Nevertheless the children of Israel drove not out the Geshurites, nor the Maacathites: but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel unto this day.

13However, the Israelites did not drive out the people of Geshur and Maacath; they still live among the Israelites today.

14Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings of Jehovah, the God of Israel, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spake unto him.

14Moses did not give any land to the tribe of Levi. Instead, their inheritance consists of the food offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, just as he told them.

15And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their families.

15Moses gave a portion of land to the families of the tribe of Reuben.

16And their border was from Aroer, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeba;

16Their territory started at Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Valley, including the town in the middle of the valley and the whole plateau past Medeba.

17Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon,

17It included Heshbon and all its towns on the plateau: Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,

18and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

18Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

19and Kiriathaim, and Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar in the mount of the valley,

19Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley.

20and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth,

20It also included Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth.

21and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, that dwelt in the land.

21The territory covered all the towns on the plateau and the entire kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites. He ruled in Heshbon until Moses defeated him and the Midianite leaders Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. These were princes loyal to Sihon who lived in that land.

22Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among the rest of their slain.

22The Israelites also killed Balaam the diviner, the son of Beor, during the war.

23And the border of the children of Reuben was the Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

23The boundary of Reuben's land was the bank of the Jordan River. These were the cities and villages given to the families of Reuben as their inheritance.

24And Moses gave unto the tribe of Gad, unto the children of Gad, according to their families.

24Moses also gave a portion of land to the families of the tribe of Gad.

25And their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

25Their territory included Jazer, all the towns of Gilead, and half of the Ammonite land as far as Aroer, near Rabbah.

26and from Heshbon unto Ramath-mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

26It reached from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir.

27and in the valley, Beth-haram, and Beth-nimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and the border thereof, unto the uttermost part of the sea of Chinnereth beyond the Jordan eastward.

27In the valley, it included Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon—the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon. This area was on the east side of the Jordan River and went as far as the edge of the Sea of Galilee.

28This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

28These were the cities and villages given to the families of Gad as their inheritance.

29And Moses gaveinheritance unto the half-tribe of Manasseh: and it was for the half-tribe of the children of Manasseh according to their families.

29Moses gave a portion of land to the families of the half-tribe of Manasseh.

30And their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

30Their territory started at Mahanaim and included all of Bashan, the entire kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all sixty settlements of Jair in Bashan.

31and half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were for the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even for the half of the children of Machir according to their families.

31It also included half of Gilead, along with Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of Og in Bashan. This was given to the descendants of Machir son of Manasseh—to half of his families.

32These are the inheritances which Moses distributed in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho, eastward.

32These are the areas Moses assigned while they were on the plains of Moab, across the Jordan River east of Jericho.

33But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance: Jehovah, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as he spake unto them.

33But Moses gave no land as an inheritance to the tribe of Levi. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as he promised them.
