1And Jonah prayed unto Jehovah hisGod out of the fish's belly;

1Then Jonah made prayer to the Lord his God from the inside of the fish, and said,

1Now the Lord prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah: and Jonah was in the belly of a fish for three days and three nights.

2and he said: I cried by reason of my distress unto Jehovah, and he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I: thou heardest my voice.

2In my trouble I was crying to the Lord, and he gave me an answer; out of the deepest underworld I sent up a cry, and you gave ear to my voice.

2And Jonah prayed to the Lord, his God, out of the belly of the fish.

3For thou didst cast me into the depth, into the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me: All thy breakers and thy billows are gone over me.

3For you have put me down into the deep, into the heart of the sea; and the river was round about me; all your waves and your rolling waters went over me.

3And he said: I cried out of my affliction to the Lord, and he heard me: I cried out of the belly of hell, and thou hast heard my voice.

4And I said, I have been sent away from before your eyes; how may I ever again see your holy Temple?

4And thou hast cast me forth into the deep, in the heart of the sea, and a flood hast compassed me: all thy billows, and thy waves have passed over me.

5The waters encompassed me, to the soul: The deep was round about me, The weeds were wrapped about my head.

5The waters were circling round me, even to the neck; the deep was about me; the sea-grass was twisted round my head.

5And I said: I am cast away out of the sight of thy eyes: but yet I shall see the holy temple again.

6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; The bars of the earth [closed] upon me for ever: But thou hast brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah myGod.

6I went down to the bases of the mountains; as for the earth, her walls were about me for ever: but you have taken up my life from the underworld, O Lord my God.

6The waters compassed me about even to the soul: the deep hath closed me round about, the sea hath covered my head.

7When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah; And my prayer came in unto thee, Into thy holy temple.

7When my soul in me was overcome, I kept the memory of the Lord: and my prayer came in to you, into your holy Temple.

7I went down to the lowest parts of the mountains: the bars of the earth have shut me up for ever: and thou wilt bring up my life from corruption, O Lord, my God.

8The worshippers of false gods have given up their only hope.

8When my soul was in distress within me, I remembered the Lord: that my prayer may come to thee, unto the holy temple.

9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah.

9But I will make an offering to you with the voice of praise; I will give effect to my oaths. Salvation is the Lord's.

10And Jehovah commanded the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry [land].

10And at the Lord's order, the fish sent Jonah out of its mouth on to the dry land.

10But I with the voice of praise will sacrifice to thee: I will pay whatsoever I have vowed for my salvation to the Lord.
