1Then Jonah prayed unto Jehovah his God out of the fish’s belly.

1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the belly of the fish.

2And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah, And he answered me; Out of the belly of Sheol cried I, And thou heardest my voice.

2He said: 'In my distress I called out to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the world of the dead I cried for help, and you heard my voice.

3For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, And the flood was round about me; All thy waves and thy billows passed over me.

3You threw me into the depths, into the very heart of the ocean, and the currents swirled around me. All your waves and crashing breakers swept over me.

4And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes; Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

4I thought, "I have been driven away from your presence; yet I will look again toward your holy temple."

5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; The deep was round about me; The weeds were wrapped about my head.

5The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep sea surrounded me, and seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed upon me for ever: Yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God.

6I sank down to the roots of the mountains; the earth beneath me locked its bars forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit.

7When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah; And my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple.

7As my life was slipping away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer rose to you in your holy temple.

8They that regard lying vanities Forsake their own mercy.

8Those who worship worthless idols turn away from the mercy that could be theirs.

9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah.

9But I will offer a sacrifice to you with songs of praise. I will fulfill the vows I have made. Salvation comes from the LORD.'

10And Jehovah spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

10Then the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto dry land.
