1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.
1A man there hath been in the land of Uz--Job his name--and that man hath been perfect and upright--both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.
1There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. He was without sin and upright, fearing God and keeping himself far from evil.
2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
2And there are borne to him seven sons and three daughters,
2And he had seven sons and three daughters.
3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
3and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a service very abundant; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east.
3And of cattle he had seven thousand sheep and goats, and three thousand camels, and a thousand oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great number of servants. And the man was greater than any of the sons of the east.
4And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
4And his sons have gone and made a banquet--the house of each <FI>in<Fi> his day--and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them;
4His sons regularly went to one another's houses, and every one on his day gave a feast: and at these times they sent for their three sisters to take part in their feasts with them.
5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
5and it cometh to pass, when they have gone round the days of the banquet, that Job doth send and sanctify them, and hath risen early in the morning, and caused to ascend burnt-offerings--the number of them all--for Job said, `Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.' Thus doth Job all the days.
5And at the end of their days of feasting, Job sent and made them clean, getting up early in the morning and offering burned offerings for them all. For, Job said, It may be that my sons have done wrong and said evil of God in their hearts. And Job did this whenever the feasts came round.
6Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.
6And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.
6And there was a day when the sons of the gods came together before the Lord, and the Satan came with them.
7And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
7And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence comest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.'
7And the Lord said to the Satan, Where do you come from? And the Satan said in answer, From wandering this way and that on the earth, and walking about on it.
8And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.
8And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?'
8And the Lord said to the Satan, Have you taken note of my servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth, a man without sin and upright, fearing God and keeping himself far from evil?
9Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
9And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `For nought is Job fearing God?
9And the Satan said in answer to the Lord, Is it for nothing that Job is a god-fearing man?
10Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
10Hast not Thou made a hedge for him, and for his house, and for all that he hath--round about?
10Have you yourself not put a wall round him and his house and all he has on every side, blessing the work of his hands, and increasing his cattle in the land?
11But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.
11The work of his hands Thou hast blessed, and his substance hath spread in the land, and yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike against anything that he hath--if not: to Thy face he doth bless Thee!'
11But now, put out your hand against all he has, and he will be cursing you to your face.
12And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.
12And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, all that he hath <FI>is<Fi> in thy hand, only unto him put not forth thy hand.' And the Adversary goeth out from the presence of Jehovah.
12And the Lord said to the Satan, See, I give all he has into your hands, only do not put a finger on the man himself. And the Satan went out from before the Lord.
13And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,
13And the day is, that his sons and his daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.
13And there was a day when his sons and daughters were feasting in the house of their oldest brother,
14that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;
14And a messenger hath come in unto Job and saith, `The oxen have been plowing, and the she-asses feeding by their sides,
14And a man came to Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the asses were taking their food by their side:
15and the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
15and Sheba doth fall, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'
15And the men of Sheba came against them and took them away, putting the young men to the sword, and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news.
16While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Fire of God hath fallen from the heavens, and burneth among the flock, and among the young men, and consumeth them, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI> it<Fi> to thee.'
16And this one was still talking when another came, and said, The fire of God came down from heaven, burning up the sheep and the goats and the young men completely, and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news.
17While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
17While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Chaldeans made three heads, and rush on the camels, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'
17And this one was still talking when another came, and said, The Chaldaeans made themselves into three bands, and came down on the camels and took them away, putting the young men to the sword, and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news.
18While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house;
18While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Thy sons and thy daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.
18And this one was still talking when another came, and said, Your sons and your daughters were feasting together in their oldest brother's house,
19and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
19And lo, a great wind hath come from over the wilderness, and striketh against the four corners of the house, and it falleth on the young men, and they are dead, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'
19When a great wind came rushing from the waste land against the four sides of the house, and it came down on the young men, and they are dead; and I was the only one who got away safe to give you the news.
20Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;
20And Job riseth, and rendeth his robe, and shaveth his head, and falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance,
20Then Job got up, and after parting his clothing and cutting off his hair, he went down on his face to the earth, and gave worship, and said,
21and he said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.
21and he saith, `Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked I turn back thither: Jehovah hath given and Jehovah hath taken: let the name of Jehovah be blessed.'
21With nothing I came out of my mother's body, and with nothing I will go back there; the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; let the Lord's name be praised.
