Job 1

1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

1There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil.

1A man there hath been in the land of Uz--Job his name--and that man hath been perfect and upright--both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.

2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

2And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

2And there are borne to him seven sons and three daughters,

3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

3And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceedingly great: and this man was great among all the people of the east.

3and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a service very abundant; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east.

4And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

4And his sons went, and made a feast by houses, every one in his day. And sending, they called their three sisters, to eat and drink with them.

4And his sons have gone and made a banquet--the house of each <FI>in<Fi> his day--and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them;

5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

5And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early, offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days.

5and it cometh to pass, when they have gone round the days of the banquet, that Job doth send and sanctify them, and hath risen early in the morning, and caused to ascend burnt-offerings--the number of them all--for Job said, `Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.' Thus doth Job all the days.

6Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

6Now on a certain day, when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.

6And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.

7And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

7And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.

7And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Whence comest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.'

8And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

8And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant, Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil?

8And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?'

9Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

9And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain?

9And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, `For nought is Job fearing God?

10Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

10Hast thou not made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth?

10Hast not Thou made a hedge for him, and for his house, and for all that he hath--round about?

11But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

11But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he bless thee not to thy face.

11The work of his hands Thou hast blessed, and his substance hath spread in the land, and yet, put forth, I pray Thee, Thy hand, and strike against anything that he hath--if not: to Thy face he doth bless Thee!'

12And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

12Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.

12And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, `Lo, all that he hath <FI>is<Fi> in thy hand, only unto him put not forth thy hand.' And the Adversary goeth out from the presence of Jehovah.

13And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house,

13Now upon a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their eldest brother,

13And the day is, that his sons and his daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.

14that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;

14There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them,

14And a messenger hath come in unto Job and saith, `The oxen have been plowing, and the she-asses feeding by their sides,

15and the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

15And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

15and Sheba doth fall, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'

16While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

16And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

16While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Fire of God hath fallen from the heavens, and burneth among the flock, and among the young men, and consumeth them, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI> it<Fi> to thee.'

17While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

17And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them; moreover, they have slain the servants with the sword: and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

17While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Chaldeans made three heads, and rush on the camels, and take them, and the young men they have smitten by the mouth of the sword, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'

18While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house;

18He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,

18While this <FI>one<Fi> is speaking another also hath come and saith, `Thy sons and thy daughters are eating, and drinking wine, in the house of their brother, the first-born.

19and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

19A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children, and they are dead: and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

19And lo, a great wind hath come from over the wilderness, and striketh against the four corners of the house, and it falleth on the young men, and they are dead, and I am escaped--only I alone--to declare <FI>it<Fi> to thee.'

20Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

20Then Job rose up, and rent his garments, and having shaven his head, fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

20And Job riseth, and rendeth his robe, and shaveth his head, and falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance,

21and he said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

21And said: Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord, so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord.

21and he saith, `Naked came I forth from the womb of my mother, and naked I turn back thither: Jehovah hath given and Jehovah hath taken: let the name of Jehovah be blessed.'

22In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

22In all these things Job sinned not by his lips, nor spoke he any foolish thing against God.

22In all this Job hath not sinned, nor given folly to God.
