1The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.

1This is the message from the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh attacked the city of Gaza.

2Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall become an overflowing stream, and shall overflow the land and all that is therein, the city and them that dwell therein; and the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall wail.

2This is what the LORD says: 'Look, an army is rising up from the north like rising water. It will become a flooding river that overflows the land and everything in it, including the cities and the people living there. People will cry out for help, and everyone living in the land will wail in pain.

3At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers look not back to their children for feebleness of hands;

3At the sound of the thundering hooves of their powerful horses, the rush of the chariots, and the rumbling of the wheels, fathers will be too weak with fear to even turn back and help their own children.

4because of the day that cometh to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remaineth: for Jehovah will destroy the Philistines, the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.

4The day has come to destroy all the Philistines and to cut off every ally left for Tyre and Sidon. The LORD is about to destroy the Philistines, the survivors who came from the island of Crete.

5Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is brought to nought, the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?

5The people of Gaza will shave their heads in mourning, and Ashkelon will be silenced. You who remain on the plain, how long will you mourn by cutting yourselves?

6O thou sword of Jehovah, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard; rest, and be still.

6'O sword of the LORD, how long will you keep striking? Go back into your sheath. Rest and be still!'

7How canst thou be quiet, seeing Jehovah hath given thee a charge? Against Ashkelon, and against the sea-shore, there hath he appointed it.

7But how can the sword be quiet when the LORD has given it an order? He has sent it to attack Ashkelon and the people living along the coast.
