1The word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah, when he wrote these words in a book at the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying,
1This is the message that the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah in the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah. Baruch had just finished writing down everything Jeremiah told him in a scroll.
2Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, unto thee, O Baruch:
2This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to you, Baruch:
3Thou didst say, Woe is me now! for Jehovah hath added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.
3You said, 'I am in terrible trouble! The LORD has added grief to my pain. I am worn out from crying, and I cannot find any rest.'
4Thus shalt thou say unto him, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up; and this in the whole land.
4Jeremiah, tell Baruch this: 'The LORD says, I am about to tear down what I have built and pull up what I have planted throughout this entire land.'
5And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not; for, behold, I will bring evil upon all flesh, saith Jehovah; but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.
5'Are you looking for great things for yourself? Do not do it! For I am about to bring disaster on everyone, says the LORD. But wherever you go, I will let you escape with your life as your only reward.'
