1The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Jerusalem and Judah, that were carried away captive unto Babylon.
1This is the message that came to Jeremiah from the LORD after Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being marched off to Babylon.
2And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said unto him, Jehovah thy God pronounced this evil upon this place;
2The captain of the guard took Jeremiah aside and said to him, 'The LORD your God promised to bring this disaster on this place;'
3and Jehovah hath brought it, and done according as he spake: because ye have sinned against Jehovah, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.
3'and now the LORD has brought it about; he has done exactly what he said he would. This happened because you people sinned against the LORD and did not obey him.'
4And now, behold, I loose thee this day from the chains which are upon thy hand. If it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon, come, and I will look well unto thee; but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon, forbear: behold, all the land is before thee; whither it seemeth good and right unto thee to go, thither go.
4'But now, look, I am freeing you today from the chains on your wrists. If you want to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will take good care of you. But if you don't want to come, then don't. Look, the whole land is open to you; go wherever you think is best and right.'
5Now while he was not yet gone back, Go back then, said he, to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wheresoever it seemeth right unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a present, and let him go.
5Before Jeremiah could turn to leave, the captain added, 'Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed as governor over the towns of Judah. Live with him among the people, or go wherever else you want.' Then the captain gave him a supply of food and a gift and let him go.
6Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah, and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land.
6Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and lived there with him among the people who were left in the land.
7Now when all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poorest of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;
7When all the army officers and their men who were still out in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor of the land, and had put him in charge of the men, women, and children who were the poorest in the land—those who had not been taken away to Babylon—
8then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, to wit, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.
8they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. These men were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai from Netophah, and Jezaniah son of the Maakathite, along with their men.
9And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men, saying, Fear not to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
9Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, made a promise to them and their men, saying, 'Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and things will go well for you.'
10As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans that shall come unto us: but ye, gather ye wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that ye have taken.
10'As for me, I will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us. But you should go and harvest the wine, the summer fruits, and the olive oil. Store them in your jars and live in the towns you have taken over.'
11Likewise when all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and that were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;
11When all the Jews who were in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a few people in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, over them,
12then all the Jews returned out of all places whither they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, unto Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.
12they all returned to the land of Judah from the places where they had been scattered. They came to Gedaliah at Mizpah and harvested a large amount of wine and summer fruit.
13Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah,
13Johanan son of Kareah and all the other army officers who were still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.
14and said unto him, Dost thou know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take thy life? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not.
14They said to him, 'Do you realize that Baalis, the king of the Ammonites, has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you?' But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them.
15Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he take thy life, that all the Jews that are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?
15Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah at Mizpah, saying, 'Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah. No one needs to know. Why should he be allowed to kill you? If he does, all the Jews who have gathered around you will be scattered, and the few people left in Judah will be destroyed.'
