1And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, when Ehud was dead.

1After Ehud died, the people of Israel again did what was wrong in the Lord’s sight.

2And Jehovah sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.

2So the Lord allowed Jabin, a Canaanite king who ruled in Hazor, to conquer them. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim.

3And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

3The Israelites cried out to the Lord for help because Jabin had nine hundred iron chariots and had cruelly oppressed them for twenty years.

4Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

4At that time, a prophetess named Deborah, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel as a judge.

5And she dwelt under the palm-tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in the hill-country of Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.

5She used to sit under the Palm Tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went to her to have their disputes settled.

6And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded, saying, Go and draw unto mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?

6One day she sent for Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, 'The Lord, the God of Israel, commands you: Gather ten thousand men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them to Mount Tabor.'

7And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thy hand.

7'I will lure Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, along with his chariots and troops, to the Kishon River. There I will give you the victory over him.'

8And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go; but if thou wilt not go with me, I will not go.

8Barak said to her, 'If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.'

9And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding, the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honor; for Jehovah will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

9'I will certainly go with you,' Deborah replied. 'But because of the way you are doing this, you will receive no honor. For the Lord will hand Sisera over to a woman.' So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh.

10And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali together to Kedesh; and there went up ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.

10Barak called the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh. Ten thousand men followed him, and Deborah went with him as well.

11Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab the brother-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

11Now Heber the Kenite had moved away from the other Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, Moses' brother-in-law. He had pitched his tent as far away as the oak tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh.

12And they told Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor.

12When Sisera was told that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor,

13And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles, unto the river Kishon.

13he called together all nine hundred of his iron chariots and all his men. They marched from Harosheth-hagoyim to the Kishon River.

14And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which Jehovah hath delivered Sisera into thy hand; is not Jehovah gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.

14Then Deborah said to Barak, 'Get ready! This is the day the Lord has handed Sisera over to you. Hasn't the Lord gone out ahead of you?' So Barak led his ten thousand men down from Mount Tabor into battle.

15And Jehovah discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

15The Lord threw Sisera and all his chariots and warriors into a panic before Barak’s advancing army. Sisera jumped down from his chariot and escaped on foot.

16But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; there was not a man left.

16Barak chased the chariots and the army all the way to Harosheth-hagoyim. Sisera’s entire army was killed by the sword; not one man survived.

17Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

17Meanwhile, Sisera ran to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because King Jabin of Hazor and Heber’s family were on friendly terms.

18And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And he turned in unto her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.

18Jael went out to meet Sisera and said to him, 'Come in, my lord. Come into my tent. Don't be afraid.' So he went into her tent, and she covered him with a blanket.

19And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.

19'Please give me a little water,' he said. 'I’m thirsty.' She opened a leather bag of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him up again.

20And he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and inquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No.

20'Stand at the door of the tent,' he told her. 'If anyone comes and asks if there is anyone here, say "No."'

21Then Jael Heber’s wife took a tent-pin, and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the pin into his temples, and it pierced through into the ground; for he was in a deep sleep; so he swooned and died.

21But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg and a hammer. While he was fast asleep from exhaustion, she quietly went to him and drove the peg through his temple into the ground. And so he died.

22And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will show thee the man whom thou seekest. And he came unto her; and, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the tent-pin was in his temples.

22When Barak came by chasing Sisera, Jael went out to meet him. 'Come,' she said, 'I will show you the man you are looking for.' He went inside with her, and there lay Sisera dead, with the tent peg through his temple.

23So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.

23On that day, God defeated Jabin, the Canaanite king, in the presence of the Israelites.

24And the hand of the children of Israel prevailed more and more against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

24The Israelites grew stronger and stronger against King Jabin of Canaan until they finally destroyed him.
