1And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hands of the Philistines forty years.
1And the sons of Israel add to do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
1And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
2Now there was a certain man of Saraa, and of the race of Dan, whose name was Manue, and his wife was barren.
2And there is a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danite, and his name <FI>is<Fi> Manoah, his wife <FI>is<Fi> barren, and hath not borne;
2And there was a certain man of Zoreah, of the family of the Danites, and his name was Manoah. And his wife was barren and did not bear.
3And an angel of the Lord appeared to her, and said: Thou art barren and without children: but thou shalt conceive and bear a son.
3and a messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto the woman, and saith unto her, `Lo, I pray thee, thou <FI>art<Fi> barren, and hast not borne; when thou hast conceived, then thou hast borne a son.
3And the Angel of Jehovah appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold now, thou art barren and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive and bear a son.
4Now therefore beware, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing.
4And, now, take heed, I pray thee, and do not drink wine, and strong drink, and do not eat any unclean thing,
4And now beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat nothing unclean.
5Because thou shalt conceive, and bear a son, and no razor shall touch his head: for he shall be a Nazarite of God, from his infancy, and from his mother's womb, and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines.
5for, lo, thou art conceiving and bearing a son, and a razor doth not go up on his head, for a Nazarite to God is the youth from the womb, and he doth begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.'
5For lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son, and no razor shall come on his head; for the boy shall be a Nazarite ofGod from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
6And when she was come to her husband, she said to him: A man of God came to me, having the countenance of an angel, very awful. And when I asked him whence he came, and by what name he was called, he would not tell me:
6And the woman cometh and speaketh to her husband, saying, `A man of God hath come unto me, and his appearance <FI>is<Fi> as the appearance of a messenger of God, very fearful, and I have not asked him whence he <FI>is<Fi> , and his name he hath not declared to me;
6And the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man ofGod came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of an angel ofGod, very terrible; but I did not ask him whence he was, neither did he tell me his name.
7But he answered thus: Behold thou shalt conceive and bear a son: beware thou drink no wine, nor strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a Nazarite of God from his infancy, from his mother's womb until the day of his death.
7and he saith to me, Lo, thou art pregnant, and bearing a son, and now do not drink wine and strong drink, and do not eat any unclean thing, for a Nazarite to God is the youth from the womb till the day of his death.'
7And he said to me, Behold, thou shalt conceive and bear a son; and now drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not anything unclean; for the boy shall be a Nazarite ofGod from the womb to the day of his death.
8Then Manue prayed to the Lord, and said: I beseech thee, O Lord, that the man of God, whom thou didst send, may come again, and teach us what we ought to do concerning the child, that shall be born.
8And Manoah maketh entreaty unto Jehovah, and saith, `O, my Lord, the man of God whom Thou didst send, let him come in, I pray thee, again unto us, and direct us what we do to the youth who is born.'
8Then Manoah prayed to Jehovah, and said, Ah Lord! let the man ofGod which thou didst send come again unto us, I pray thee, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.
9And the Lord heard the prayer of Manue, and the angel of the Lord appeared again to his wife, as she was sitting in the field. But Manue her husband was not with her. And when she saw the angel,
9And God hearkeneth to the voice of Manoah, and the messenger of God cometh again unto the woman, and she <FI>is<Fi> sitting in a field, and Manoah her husband is not with her,
9AndGod hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the Angel ofGod came again to the woman whilst she sat in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her.
10She made haste, and ran to her husband: and told him, saying: Behold the man hath appeared to me, whom I saw before.
10and the woman hasteth, and runneth, and declareth to her husband, and saith unto him, `Lo, he hath appeared unto me--the man who came on <FI>that<Fi> day unto me.'
10Then the woman hasted and ran, and informed her husband, and said to him, Behold, the man has appeared to me, that came to me that day.
11He rose up, and followed his wife: and coming to the man, said to him: Art thou he that spoke to the woman? And he answered: I am.
11And Manoah riseth, and goeth after his wife, and cometh unto the man, and saith to him, `Art thou the man who spake unto the woman?' and he saith, `I <FI>am<Fi> .'
11And Manoah rose up and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, Art thou the man that didst speak to the woman? And he said, I am.
12And Manue said to him: When thy word shall come to pass, what wilt thou that the child should do? or from what shall he keep himself?
12And Manoah saith, `Now let thy words come to pass; what is the custom of the youth--and his work?'
12And Manoah said, When thy words then come to pass, what shall be the child's manner and his doing?
13And the angel of the Lord said to Manue: From all the things I have spoken of to thy wife, let her refrain herself:
13And the messenger of Jehovah saith unto Manoah, `Of all that I said unto the woman let her take heed;
13And the Angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware:
14And let her eat nothing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: and whatsoever I have commanded her, let her fulfil and observe.
14of anything which cometh out from the wine-vine she doth not eat, and wine and strong drink she doth not drink, and any unclean thing she doth not eat; all that I have commanded her she doth observe.'
14she shall not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither shall she drink wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean: all that I commanded her shall she observe.
15And Manue said to the angel of the Lord: I beseech thee to consent to my request, and let us dress a kid for thee.
15And Manoah saith unto the messenger of Jehovah, `Let us detain thee, we pray thee, and prepare before thee a kid of the goats.'
15And Manoah said to the Angel of Jehovah, I pray thee, let us detain thee, and we will make ready a kid of the goats for thee.
16And the angel answered him: If thou press me I will not eat of thy bread: but if thou wilt offer a holocaust, offer it to the Lord. And Manue knew not it was the angel of the Lord.
16And the messenger of Jehovah saith unto Manoah, `If thou detain me--I do not eat of thy bread; and if thou prepare a burnt-offering--to Jehovah thou dost offer it;' for Manoah hath not known that He <FI>is<Fi> a messenger of Jehovah.
16And the Angel of Jehovah said to Manoah, Though thou shouldest detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt offer a burnt-offering, thou shalt offer it up to Jehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the Angel of Jehovah.
17And he said to him: What is thy name, that, if thy word shall come to pass, we may honour thee?
17And Manoah saith unto the messenger of Jehovah, `What <FI>is<Fi> thy name? when thy words come to pass, then we have honoured thee.'
17And Manoah said to the Angel of Jehovah, What is thy name, that when thy word cometh to pass we may do thee honour?
18And he answered him: Why askest thou my name, which is wonderful?
18And the messenger of Jehovah saith to him, `Why <FI>is<Fi> this--thou dost ask for My name? --and it <FI>is<Fi> Wonderful.'
18And the Angel of Jehovah said to him, How is it that thou askest after my name, seeing it is wonderful?
19Then Manue took a kid of the flocks, and the libations, and put them upon a rock, offering to the Lord, who doth wonderful things: and he and his wife looked on.
19And Manoah taketh the kid of the goats, and the present, and offereth on the rock to Jehovah, and He is doing wonderfully, and Manoah and his wife are looking on,
19Then Manoah took the kid and the oblation, and offered it up to Jehovah upon the rock. And he did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on.
20And when the flame from the altar went up towards heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended also in the same. And when Manue and his wife saw this, they fell flat on the ground;
20and it cometh to pass, in the going up of the flame from off the altar toward the heavens, that the messenger of Jehovah goeth up in the flame of the altar, and Manoah and his wife are looking on, and they fall on their faces to the earth,
20And it came to pass, as the flame went up from off the altar towards the heavens, that the Angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar; and Manoah and his wife looked on, and fell on their faces to the ground.
21And the angel of the Lord appeared to them no more. And forthwith Manue understood that it was an angel of the Lord,
21and the messenger of Jehovah hath not added again to appear unto Manoah, and unto his wife, then hath Manoah known that He <FI>is<Fi> a messenger of Jehovah.
21And the Angel of Jehovah appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that it was the Angel of Jehovah.
22And he said to his wife: We shall certainly die, because we have seen God.
22And Manoah saith unto his wife, `We certainly die, for we have seen God.'
22And Manoah said to his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seenGod.
23And his wife answered him: If the Lord had a mind to kill us, he would not have received a holocaust and libations at our hands; neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor have told us the things that are to come.
23And his wife saith to him, `If Jehovah were desirous to put us to death, He had not received from our hands burnt-offering and present, nor shewed us all these things, nor as <FI>at this<Fi> time caused us to hear <FI>anything<Fi> like this.'
23But his wife said to him, If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and an oblation at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would he at this time have told us [such things] as these.
24And she bore a son, and called his name Samson. And the child grew, and the Lord blessed him.
24And the woman beareth a son, and calleth his name Samson, and the youth groweth, and Jehovah doth bless him,
24And the woman bore a son, and called his name Samson. And the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him.
