Isaiah 9

1Nevertheless the darkness shall not be as when the distress was in the [land], at the time he at first lightly, and afterwards heavily, visited the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, — the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

1In earlier times he made the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali of small value, but after that he gave it glory, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

1As the former time made light The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, So the latter hath honoured the way of the sea, Beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

2the people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them light hath shone.

2The people who went in the dark have seen a great light, and for those who were living in the land of the deepest night, the light is shining.

2The people who are walking in darkness Have seen a great light, Dwellers in a land of death-shade, Light hath shone upon them.

3Thou hast multiplied the nation, hast increased its joy: they joy before thee like to the joy in harvest; as [men] rejoice when they divide the spoil.

3You have made them very glad, increasing their joy. They are glad before you as men are glad in the time of getting in the grain, or when they make division of the goods taken in war.

3Thou hast multiplied the nation, Thou hast made great its joy, They have joyed before Thee as the joy in harvest, As <FI>men<Fi> rejoice in their apportioning spoil.

4For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of Midian.

4For by your hand the yoke on his neck and the rod on his back, even the rod of his cruel master, have been broken, as in the day of Midian.

4Because the yoke of its burden, And the staff of its shoulder, the rod of its exactor, Thou hast broken as <FI>in<Fi> the day of Midian.

5For every boot of him that is shod for the tumult, and the garment rolled in blood, shall be for burning, fuel for fire.

5For every boot of the man of war with his sounding step, and the clothing rolled in blood, will be for burning, food for the fire.

5For every battle of a warrior <FI>is<Fi> with rushing, and raiment rolled in blood, And it hath been for burning--fuel of fire.

6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name is called Wonderful, Counsellor, MightyGod, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.

6For to us a child has come, to us a son is given; and the government has been placed in his hands; and he has been named Wise Guide, Strong God, Father for ever, Prince of Peace.

6For a Child hath been born to us, A Son hath been given to us, And the princely power is on his shoulder, And He doth call his name Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.

7Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with judgment and with righteousness, from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

7Of the increase of his rule and of peace there will be no end, on the seat of David, and in his kingdom; to make it strong, supporting it with wise decision and righteousness, now and for ever. By the fixed purpose of the Lord of armies this will be done.

7To the increase of the princely power, And of peace, there is no end, On the throne of David, and on his kingdom, To establish it, and to support it, In judgment and in righteousness, Henceforth, even unto the age, The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts doth this.

8The Lord sent a word unto Jacob, and it lighteth upon Israel.

8The Lord has sent a word to Jacob, and it has come on Israel;

8A word hath the Lord sent into Jacob, And it hath fallen in Israel.

9And all the people shall know [it], Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and stoutness of heart,

9And all the people will have experience of it, even Ephraim and the men of Samaria, who say in the pride of their uplifted hearts,

9And the people have known--all of it, Ephraim, and the inhabitant of Samaria, In pride and in greatness of heart, saying,

10The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones; the sycamore trees are cut down, but we will replace them with cedars.

10The bricks have come down, but we will put up buildings of cut stone in their place: the sycamores are cut down, but they will be changed to cedars.

10`Bricks have fallen, and hewn work we build, Sycamores have been cut down, and cedars we renew.'

11And Jehovah will set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and arm his enemies,

11For this cause the Lord has made strong the haters of Israel, driving them on to make war against him;

11And Jehovah setteth the adversaries of Rezin on high above him, And his enemies he joineth together,

12the Syrians on the east, and the Philistines on the west; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

12Aram on the east, and the Philistines on the west, who have come against Israel with open mouths. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

12Aram from before, and Philistia from behind, And they devour Israel with the whole mouth. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

13But the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, and they do not seek Jehovah of hosts.

13But the heart of the people was not turned to him who sent punishment on them, and they made no prayer to the Lord of armies.

13And the people hath not turned back unto Him who is smiting it, And Jehovah of Hosts they have not sought.

14And Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day:

14For this cause the Lord took away from Israel head and tail, high and low, in one day.

14And Jehovah cutteth off from Israel head and tail, Branch and reed--the same day,

15the ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

15The man who is honoured and responsible is the head, and the prophet who gives false teaching is the tail.

15Elder, and accepted of face, he <FI>is<Fi> the head, Prophet, teacher of falsehood, he <FI>is<Fi> the tail.

16For the guides of this people mislead [them]; and they that are guided by them are swallowed up.

16For the guides of this people are the cause of their wandering from the right way, and those who are guided by them come to destruction.

16And the eulogists of this people are causing to err, And its eulogised ones are consumed.

17Therefore the Lord will not rejoice in their young men, neither will he have mercy on their fatherless and on their widows; for every one is a hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

17For this cause the Lord will have no pleasure in their young men, and no pity on their widows and the children without fathers: for they are all haters of God and evil-doers, and foolish words come from every mouth. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

17Therefore, over its young men the Lord rejoiceth not, And its orphans, and its widows He pitieth not, For every one <FI>is<Fi> profane, and an evil doer, And every mouth is speaking folly. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

18For wickedness burneth as a fire: it devoureth briars and thorns, and kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they go rolling up like a pillar of smoke.

18For evil was burning like a fire; the blackberries and thorns were burned up; the thick woods took fire, rolling up in dark clouds of smoke.

18For burned as a fire hath wickedness, Brier and thorn it devoureth, And it kindleth in thickets of the forest, And they lift themselves up, an exaltation of smoke!

19Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burned up, and the people is as fuel for fire: a man spareth not his brother;

19The land was dark with the wrath of the Lord of armies: the people were like those who take men's flesh for food.

19In the wrath of Jehovah of Hosts Hath the land been consumed, And the people is as fuel of fire; A man on his brother hath no pity,

20and he snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry, and eateth on the left hand; and they are not satisfied. They eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

20On the right a man was cutting off bits and was still in need; on the left a man took a meal but had not enough; no man had pity on his brother; every man was making a meal of the flesh of his neighbour.

20And cutteth down on the right, and hath been hungry, And he devoureth on the left, And they have not been satisfied, Each the flesh of his own arm they devour.

21Manasseh, Ephraim, and Ephraim, Manasseh; [and] they together are against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

21Manasseh was making a meal of Ephraim, and Ephraim of Manasseh; and together they were attacking Judah. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

21Manasseh--Ephraim, and Ephraim--Manasseh, Together they <FI>are<Fi> against Judah, With all this not turned back hath His anger. And still His hand is stretched out!
