1But now thus saith Jehovah that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine.

1But now, this is what the LORD says—the one who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel: Do not be afraid, for I have bought you back; I have called you by your name; you belong to me.

2When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

2When you pass through deep waters, I will be with you; when you pass through rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not consume you.

3For I am Jehovah thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour; I have given Egypt as thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in thy stead.

3For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt as a ransom for you, and Ethiopia and Seba in your place.

4Since thou hast been precious in my sight, and honorable, and I have loved thee; therefore will I give men in thy stead, and peoples instead of thy life.

4Because you are precious to me and honored, and because I love you, I will give other people in exchange for you and other nations in exchange for your life.

5Fear not; for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

5Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.

6I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back; bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the end of the earth;

6I will tell the north, 'Give them up!' and the south, 'Do not hold them back!' Bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the ends of the earth.

7every one that is called by my name, and whom I have created for my glory, whom I have formed, yea, whom I have made.

7Bring everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.

8Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.

8Lead out the people who have eyes but are blind, and those who have ears but are deaf.

9Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the peoples be assembled: who among them can declare this, and show us former things? let them bring their witnesses, that they may be justified; or let them hear, and say, It is truth.

9Let all the nations gather together and all the people assemble. Which of their gods predicted this or told us what happened in the past? Let them bring their witnesses to prove they are right, so others can hear and say, 'It is true.'

10Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

10'You are my witnesses,' declares the LORD, 'and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am God. Before me no god was formed, and there will be none after me.'

11I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour.

11I, even I, am the LORD, and there is no savior except me.

12I have declared, and I have saved, and I have showed; and there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and I am God.

12I have spoken, I have saved, and I have announced it. It was not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,' declares the LORD, 'that I am God.'

13Yea, since the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who can hinder it?

13'From ancient days I am he. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?'

14Thus saith Jehovah, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and I will bring down all of them as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships of their rejoicing.

14This is what the LORD says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: 'For your sake I will send an army to Babylon and bring them all down as fugitives, even the Babylonians in the ships they took pride in.'

15I am Jehovah, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.

15I am the LORD, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your King.

16Thus saith Jehovah, who maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;

16This is what the LORD says—he who made a road through the sea and a path through the powerful waters,

17who bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the mighty man (they lie down together, they shall not rise; they are extinct, they are quenched as a wick):

17who brought out the chariots and horses, the army and the reinforcements together. They lay down there, never to rise again; they were snuffed out like a candle wick.

18Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

18'Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.'

19Behold, I will do a new thing; now shall it spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

19'Look, I am doing something new! Now it springs up; can’t you see it? I am making a road in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.'

20The beasts of the field shall honor me, the jackals and the ostriches; because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to my people, my chosen,

20'The wild animals will honor me—the jackals and the ostriches—because I provide water in the wilderness and rivers in the desert to give drink to my people, my chosen ones,'

21the people which I formed for myself, that they might set forth my praise.

21'the people I formed for myself so that they might announce my praise.'

22Yet thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.

22'Yet you have not called out to me, Jacob; you have become tired of me, Israel.'

23Thou hast not brought me of thy sheep for burnt-offerings; neither hast thou honored me with thy sacrifices. I have not burdened thee with offerings, nor wearied thee with frankincense.

23'You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings, nor honored me with your sacrifices. I did not burden you with requirements for grain offerings or make you tired by demanding incense.'

24Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices; but thou hast burdened me with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.

24'You have not bought me any fragrant cane with your money or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices. Instead, you have burdened me with your sins and made me tired with your wrongs.'

25I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake; and I will not remember thy sins.

25'I, even I, am the one who wipes out your law-breaking for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins anymore.'

26Put me in remembrance; let us plead together: set thou forth thy cause, that thou mayest be justified.

26'Remind me of what happened; let us argue our case together. State your defense to show that you are innocent.'

27Thy first father sinned, and thy teachers have transgressed against me.

27'Your first ancestor sinned, and your leaders rebelled against me.'

28Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary; and I will make Jacob a curse, and Israel a reviling.

28'So I will disgrace the officials of the temple; I will hand Jacob over to total destruction and leave Israel to be insulted.'
