1Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of them that are overcome with wine!
1Trouble is coming to the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which sits above the rich valley of those who are dazed by wine!
2Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one; as a tempest of hail, a destroying storm, as a tempest of mighty waters overflowing, will he cast down to the earth with the hand.
2Look, the Lord has someone mighty and strong. Like a hailstorm or a destroying tempest, like a flood of mighty, overflowing waters, he will throw it down to the earth with his hand.
3The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under foot:
3The proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trampled underfoot.
4and the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be as the first-ripe fig before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
4That fading flower of glorious beauty, located at the head of the rich valley, will be like a ripe fig that appears before the summer harvest; as soon as someone sees it, they pick it and swallow it down.
5In that day will Jehovah of hosts become a crown of glory, and a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people;
5In that day, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will be a glorious crown and a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people.
6and a spirit of justice to him that sitteth in judgment, and strength to them that turn back the battle at the gate.
6He will give a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the city gates.
7And even these reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they stagger with strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
7But these people also stagger from wine and reel from hard liquor. The priest and the prophet stagger from strong drink; they are confused by wine and unsteady from liquor. They see false visions and stumble when making decisions.
8For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
8Every table is covered with vomit and filth; not a single place is clean.
9Whom will he teach knowledge? and whom will he make to understand the message? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?
9They say, 'Who does he think he is teaching? To whom is he explaining his message? Does he think we are nursing infants just weaned from the breast?'
10For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little.
10For he says: 'Rule on rule, rule on rule; line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there.'
11Nay, but bymen of strange lips and with another tongue will he speak to this people;
11So then, the Lord will speak to this people with mocking lips and in a foreign language.
12to whom he said, This is the rest, give ye rest to him that is weary; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
12He told them, 'This is the place of rest, let the weary rest; this is the place of refreshment,' but they would not listen.
13Therefore shall the word of Jehovah be unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
13So the word of the LORD will be to them: 'Rule on rule, rule on rule; line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there.' As a result, they will walk and fall backward; they will be injured, trapped, and captured.
14Wherefore hear the word of Jehovah, ye scoffers, that rule this people that is in Jerusalem:
14Therefore, hear the word of the LORD, you mockers who rule this people in Jerusalem.
15Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
15You claim, 'We have made a deal with death, and we have an agreement with the grave. When the overwhelming flood passes through, it won't touch us, because we have made lies our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.'
16therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-stone of sure foundation: he that believeth shall not be in haste.
16So this is what the Lord GOD says: 'Look, I am placing a foundation stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation. Whoever trusts in it will never be shaken.'
17And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place.
17I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line. Hail will sweep away your refuge of lies, and floodwaters will pour over your hiding place.
18And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
18Your deal with death will be canceled, and your agreement with the grave will not stand. When the overwhelming flood passes through, you will be trampled down by it.
19As often as it passeth through, it shall take you; for morning by morning shall it pass through, by day and by night: and it shall be nought but terror to understand the message.
19Every time it passes through, it will seize you; it will sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night. Simply understanding this message will bring pure terror.
20For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.
20The bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket is too narrow to wrap yourself in.
21For Jehovah will rise up as in mount Perazim, he will be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
21For the LORD will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim; he will be angry as he was in the Valley of Gibeon. He will come to do his work—his strange work—and to perform his task—his unusual task.
22Now therefore be ye not scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for a decree of destruction have I heard from the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, upon the whole earth.
22So stop your mocking, or your chains will be pulled even tighter. I have heard the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, decree destruction for the entire land.
23Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.
23Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say.
24Doth he that ploweth to sow plow continually? doth he continually open and harrow his ground?
24Does a farmer plow all day just to sow seeds? Does he keep on breaking up and harrowing the ground forever?
25When he hath levelled the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and put in the wheat in rows, and the barley in the appointed place, and the spelt in the border thereof?
25When he has leveled the surface, doesn't he scatter caraway and sow cumin? Doesn't he plant wheat in rows, barley in its spot, and rye at the edges?
26For his God doth instruct him aright, and doth teach him.
26His God instructs him and teaches him the right way.
27For the fitches are not threshed with a sharp threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.
27Caraway is not threshed with a heavy sledge, and a cart wheel is not rolled over cumin. Instead, caraway is beaten out with a stick, and cumin with a rod.
